Summary

You will become adept at supporting all production processes, whilst developing your own technical skillset. You will assist with technical support and production queries, identify and implement process improvements, and assist with standard operating procedures. In addition, you will develop skills in technical writing, drawing, and presenting.

Wage

£14,526.20 to £23,492.04, depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

Duties will include but will not be limited to:

  • Use of inspection and measuring equipment
  • Assembly of more complex products, gaining knowledge of medium to heavy builds, shimming and balancing all to engineering drawings
  • Assembly of movable components
  • Mechanical assembly of 19” racks to involve dimensional set up of runner rails, angles, gland plates and earth bars
  • Set up and alignment of all units installed in the rack assembly
  • Assisting with small to medium box build and chassis assemblies with front panels, runners, and various components installed
  • Working with small mechanical assemblies
  • Assisting with looming and routing of different types of cables
  • Using crimp tools and being able to identify the correct one
  • Using connector terminations and multi-pin connectors
  • Soldering on connectors and cables
  • Using slip rings, cables with junctions, splices (soldered and crimped) and multi-core cables
  • Wiring rack assemblies with fixed units, wiring basic racks, power, RF and data wiring
  • Assisting with the assembly and wiring of racks with withdrawable units, fitting of waveguide connectors

  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.
  • Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Your training plan

This apprenticeship will be a one day per week, day release at Macclesfield College.
