Summary

Do you have a passion for mechanical engineering and problem solving, fantastic communication skills and work well both individually as well as within a team? This wide-ranging apprenticeship in our service centre will include machining and bench fitting, welding, electrics, disassembly, cleaning, inspection, balancing, assembly and testing.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

The working week will be spent working within various sectors throughout our service centre including machining and bench fitting, welding, electrics, disassembly, cleaning, inspection, balancing, assembly & testing. You will be given thorough guidance and training in each of the sectors. Following this your duties will include : 

  • Cleaning of equipment to service/repair, including jet washing and chemical cleaning.
     
  • Use of technical drawings to assist in disassembly and re-assembly.
     
  • Using a variety of standard hand tools (imperial & metric).
     
  • Using a variety of special tools (imperial & metric).
     
  • Handling medium to heavy duty equipment.
     
  • Operating overhead cranes and lifting equipment.
     
  • Understanding of Health and Safety and correct PPE demand.
     
  • Use of welding equipment (TIG welding training given).
     
  • Assisting with goods in/goods out.
     
  • Effective use of the barcode system.
     
  • Operation of Machinery.

  • Manufacturing Alfa Laval Parts and equipment using manual and CNC machinery.

Course contents
  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.
  • Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Your training plan

Your apprenticeship will be led by our training provider SIGTA Ltd who will manage your apprenticeship program through regular visits from your Training Officer. Day release training will be delivered by Farnborough College of Technology and you will be expected to attend once a week for formal education in order to complete the Level 3 Engineering Fitter apprenticeship standard.

More training information

On completion of the apprenticeship, you will have achieved the following qualifications;

  • Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship Standard Level 3 (ST0432)

  • 603/1353/5. EAL L3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.


The final apprenticeship completion certificate will be issued on achievement of the above qualification and successful completion of end point assessment.

GCSE in:

  • English, Maths (grade 4/5 C or above)

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Science, ICT (grade 4/5 C and above)
