Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Use data to inform targets for development
  • Assist children in developing communication, reading, writing, manual dexterity, and basic educational skills as directed by the teacher or SENCO
  • Help children communicate with the teacher and follow instructions
  • Reinforce lesson content as agreed with the teacher
  • Support physiotherapy, speech therapy, and other specialist programs under appropriate guidance
  • Collaborate with staff to plan interventions and ensure pupil progress
  • Track and record pupil progress during interventions
  • Report progress or concerns to the SEND team
  • Assist students with feeding, toileting, changing clothes, and cleaning up as needed
  • Escort children to and from transport and accompany them within the school building
  • Provide support during breaks and assist with intimate care needs (training provided)
  • Attend department meetings to discuss student progress and meet with parents as required
  • Prepare teaching resources and materials for individual, class, or group activitiesAssist teachers in creating individual teaching programs
  • Modify materials for students with visual impairments or other disabilities
  • Supervise children during breaks, school trips, or in the teacher's absence for short periods
  • Perform other duties consistent with the role

  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C or above or equivalent)
  • Maths (grade 4/C or above or equivalent)
