Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Apprentice Electrician for the roll of Electrical testing and inspection Engineer.
To learn to carry out a range of Electrical testing, including:
- Electrical Installation Condition report
- Emergency Light Testing
- Thermal Imaging
- Portable appliance Testing and Data Analysis
This will also include:
- Repair and installation work, to offices, banks, sporting Arenas, corporate headquarters, public sectors, colleges, universities, distribution, schools, Government and commercial outlets
- To carry out work to a high standard and ensure it is carried out in strict compliance with the Health and Safety at work act, and any other relevant legislation covering safety in the workplace for self and others
- To learn to complete all necessary paperwork and NICEIC records to current legislative standards, to prevailing performance standards and in line with Project Solvers Procedures
- To attend college and complete coursework on time and to a high standard
- To produce, maintain and be responsible for work details to document experience
- To take on additional responsibilities in years two and three
- To carry out all necessary administrative work associated with departmental management requirements such as using PC or laptop to accurately and timely record all processes from receiving jobs through to completion including timesheets
- To liaise and work with other trades and apprentices as required
- To understand and comply with all Health and Safety policies and procedures
- To attend and fully participate in regular training and reviews with mentor and line managers
- To undertake additional duties in line with capabilities as required

Course contents
- Observe health and safety regulations and procedures including:
- Apply electrical safety tests.
- Avoid the hazard left by residual energy.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are safe and fit for purpose.
- Understand and apply EU/BS product standards.
- Apply Portable Appliance Testing.
- Identify and use the appropriate mode of communication and be able to deal with and listen to customers.
- Comply with health and safety procedures to protect colleagues, customers and their family.
- Resolve disputes and know who to report to in case of problems.
- Research and apply environmental legislation that is current and appropriate to installations and repairs.
- Advise customers on energy saving practices and choosing environmentally friendly purchases in the future.
- Use the correct lifting techniques.
- Apply safe stowing procedures.
- Fit / remove safety bolts.
- Deliver product.
- Agree suitable site, with customer, for installation.
- Carry out electrical safety tests.
- Install product to manufacturer's regulations.
- Make network connections including WiFi, Internet and blue tooth.
- Demonstrate product to customer's satisfaction ensuring customer can operate product.
- Complete paperwork including re-call registration if agreed with customer.
- Select, use and apply diagnostic tools and aids to locate fault.
- Ensure that there is not a primary reason for fault occurring.
- Ensure replacement components are correct and meet specification.
- Replace components or reinstate software using correct sequence, appropriate tools and techniques.
- Ensure no damage to other components.
- Ensure product is working properly, test it for electrical safety, EU/BS Standards and demonstrate it to the customer.
- Communicate technical findings and Product / claim investigations, both verbally and in writing.
- Observe and adhere to the principals of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) when handling spare parts and open products
- Apply the appropriate electrical, electronic & software principles to understanding the nature and reason for faults.
- Understand and apply the principles behind product connectivity
- Understand and complete Network & Router set-up
- Relate performance to speed and/or set-up of the customer network
- Understand Apps and use them in product function & troubleshooting
Your training plan
The training will be a mix of practical learning and theory covering things like:
- Health and Safety legislation
- Environmental legislation
- Practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment
- Cable termination
- Inspection and testing
- Fault finding
- Electrical principles
- Functional Skills
- Candidates will be required to achieve the Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification, (Installation) or (Maintenance).

Essential qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:

Overall Purpose: Through work experience, studying, training and development (both practical and vocational), complete a course study and obtain the following work-related professional qualifications. Within two years of joining: • NVQ Level 3 In electrical installation • City and Guilds 18th edition Within 4 years of Joining: • City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations -2391 Apprentice Electrician for the roll of Electrical testing and inspection Engineer. Communication: This role requires effective written and verbal skills and the ability to communicate well with internal and external customers. Working Conditions: This role is field based, Personal Protective Equipment to be Provided. It is the Apprentices responsibility to ensure the PPE equipment is used properly and as when required. The role also requires the ability to work flexibly and deal constructively with unanticipated/variable situations such as co-operative and not so co-operative customers and their varied home conditions. Ensure that on completion of work the property is left in a clean and tidy state. Start dates may differ from what is advertised depending on when the employer finds the right applicant for the role and when the next apprenticeship course starts.
