Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Management of the fire safety log/ register and ensuring this is kept up-to-date. Ensure all fire equipment, emergency lighting, fire doors, fire bell and alarm system are tested regularly.
  • To maintain the security of the school premises ensuring that alarms, CCTV cameras, are properly maintained and security gates regularly inspected, and any remedial works carried out immediately.
  • Carrying out procedures in the event of fire, flood, breaking and entering accident or major damage.
  • Liaison with the Security Officer, Safety Officer, Police and Fire Brigade on all aspect of security, fire safety and taking all appropriate action in the case of break in, theft or fire.
  • Take appropriate remedial action or report working practices or unsafe conditions that may contravene the Health and Safety at work Act and the Fire Precautions Regulations.
  • Carry out maintenance and repairs to the property, fixtures, fittings and furniture, minor improvements jobs and internal decorating, where such work is within the capabilities of a competent handyperson.
  • To arrange and supervise contracted staff. Directing workmen and contractors to the site of repair and maintenance work and ensuring all work is signed off only when inspection of work full contract specification has been achieved.
  • To act as one of the designated key holders ensuring access to keys is only given to authorised personnel and to maintain a register of keys and keys issued.
  • Regular water testing and management/ control of Legionella Bacteria and proper storage and use of any harmful or toxic chemicals/materials used in the school.
  • To ensure the safe and efficient operation of all mechanical, electrical and heating services in the school. Taking appropriate action to ensure and monitor proper and safe levels of lighting, heating and ventilation. As well as monitoring usage and promoting energy conservation in the school.
  • With the Headteacher, agree aims and objectives and ensure these are met within the time set
  • Support the management of school pets
  • As a keyholder, be responsible for unlocking and locking the school building and attending emergency call out as necessary.
  • To ensure the proper cleaning of the premises and site by the proper allocation and management of cleaning staff.  The cleanliness and hygiene of the school is of paramount importance and as part of the management role as the ASPM you will be responsible for the day-to-day cleaning: slippery floors, floods, spillages, and bodily fluid (which are not on children or their clothing). The removal of graffiti, ensure that all play areas, paths, entrances and drives etc. are clean, free from litter and litter bins are emptied.  Replenishment of Soap, toilet rolls, sanitary goods and towels. See that all water surfaces, drains and gutterings are free from debris. The cleaning of all light shades, fittings etc. Periodic cleaning of inside and of all external windows. Where applicable carrying out some cleaning work, generally using machinery, as allocated.
  • Engage in the school’s performance management system and ensure targets are set and met within the agreed timescale
  • To follow and log the school’s daily, weekly, monthly and annual checking systems
  • Taking responsibility for the delivery of stores, materials and other goods, signing for, storing and or moving them within the school as required.
  • Maintain plants and garden areas
  • Ensure the proper porterage of furniture and deliveries within the school and within reasonable capability.
  • Undertake other various responsibilities as directed by the Headteacher or other designated member of staff.

  • Identify and select the appropriate materials and components for property maintenance tasks, ensuring these are compliant with relevant regulatory requirements and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Comply with statutory health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Comply with risk assessments, and organise the workplace, to safeguard themselves and the property.
  • Comply with key regulatory and legislative requirements, including building regulations.
  • Uses safe working practices when carrying out property maintenance tasks including the use of PPE, signage, barriers, access equipment and ensuring work area is prepared and reinstated.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of the Offenders Act, any criminal convictions will need to be declared if you are appointed. Pay - £7.60ph increasing to £8ph after 3 months and £8.50 after 6 months (subject to successful appraisal).

We are looking for an Apprentice School Premises Manager to who will be responsible for the upkeep of the school premises which includes carrying out minor repairs and appropriate Health & Safety checks. You will be expected to liaise effectively with contractors and be willing to attend appropriate training courses. As a key holder the role will also include security of the school premises including all buildings and contents.
