Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

National Grid Interconnectors is at the heart of UK’s transition to our net zero energy future, operating a number of HVDC interconnectors that connect the UK’s energy system to some of our closest neighbours, allowing energy to be imported to and exported from the UK. As well as already owning a portfolio of HVDC Interconnectors, we’re working on developing new projects to ensure that we can meet the UK’s future demands for greener energy solutions. 

Our Operations team are responsible for ensuring safe and efficient operational running of the HVDC Interconnectors 24 hours, 365 days per year.   

The Asset Lifecycle team support Operations by developing and issuing work stacks for the routine and unplanned maintenance required to ensure our sites are healthy and available.  They are critical in the review and analysis of maintenance data, from which asset management decisions can be made.  

The Apprentice Asset Lifecycle Engineer role is an ideal role for someone looking to develop their engineering career in the following core behaviours:

Course contents

Your training plan

Initially, you will be at our National Training Centre in Eakring, Nottinghamshire for your Induction period which is around six weeks, then periodically for technical training.

In the first year, you will spend 70% of your time at the Eakring Training Centre with the remaining 30% on site (gathering site-based experience).

Year two will be 50/50 at Eakring and on-site and in the third year 70% on site and 30% at Eakring training centre.

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • 5 GCSES (or equivalent) incl. Maths and English (grade 4 and above)

Other requirements

You must be able to live away from home; primarily at our Eakring academy in Nottinghamshire. Food and accommodation are provided as standard.
