We require an enthusiastic, self-motivated, proactive, innovative and committed person(s) to join our forward-thinking team of Teaching Assistants from September 2023 to work with children on our SEN register and support them in their learning journey through our Catholic College.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

We have a variety of students requiring support, with both physical and non-physical needs.

Experience of having supported children and young people previously would be an advantage, but is not essential. Ideal candidates will have a basic understanding of how children and young people can learn and develop and will be able to work confidently with them and other adults in our Catholic college.

Candidates must be able to use their own initiative and be able to communicate confidently and effectively with children, staff and parents. All candidates must have the ability to work within and apply all school policies, and it would be advantageous to have some knowledge of the SEN code of Practice. 

The successful candidate’s role would be to support in class, across a range of curriculum lessons, working 1:1 with students with an EHCP where necessary and leading small groups and interventions under the instruction of staff.

They will be involved in assisting with our Games Club for students requiring a nurturing environment at unstructured times and assisting with/leading after-college intervention groups for literacy, numeracy and independent living skills. 

Candidates must be willing to work as a member of an enthusiastic, proactive and successful team to ensure learners of all abilities achieve their very best.  

This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring Teaching Assistant to gain qualifications and experience whilst also contributing to the positive achievement of our students and the development of each person in line with our Catholic ethos. 

Support the pupil by:

  • Undertaking activities with individuals, groups or a class of children in order to facilitate their physical, emotional and educational development within a safe environment, usually under the supervision of a teacher.
  • Working to establish a supportive relationship with the children and parents concerned in order to facilitate effective communication and partnership between school and home where appropriate.
  • Carrying out pre-determined educational activities and work programmes ensuring that specific guidelines are followed whilst promoting independent learning to support the children’s understanding.
  • Encouraging acceptance and inclusion of the child with special needs to support achievement and development.
  • Promoting and reinforcing the child’s self-esteem and encourage the child to maximise their achievement and development. Supervision of car parking for staff and visitors and ensuring that appropriate access arrangements are in place for delivery and service vehicles.
  • Attend planning meetings and under the overall direction and guidance of the teacher, contribute to the short-, medium- and long-term planning and preparation of lessons. 
  • Help pupils make progress in a range of classroom settings including working with individuals, small groups and whole classes where the assigned teacher is not present.
  • Support teachers in selecting and preparing teaching resources that meet the pupils’ needs and interests. Liaise with the class teacher to devise complementary learning activities.

Your training plan

Teaching Assistant Level 3 Standard Apprenticeship.

Functional Skills in maths and English if required.

Full training will be provided on an ongoing daily basis and when required. You will be working towards a NVQ qualification. An assessor will be allocated to you to progress/help you through your course. Continual assessment for NVQ’s coupled with assignments/or exams depending on course of study. No college attendance is required, your course will be delivered at your workplace.

Time spent training will be part of the agreed contracted hours of the working week. At the end of your training, you will sit an exam and submit course work as part of your assessment, and you will receive a Level 3 qualification.

Other requirements

IT Literate. Level of fitness to work in a demanding role. Level of discretion needed when working with families from the local area. This is a term time only position therefore wages will be paid on a pro rata basis.
