Summary

This is a trainee Vehicle Technician position in a busy garage servicing and repairing light vehicles. This would not suit a total beginner. The successful applicant will working on customer vehicles to gain experience on the job towards their level 3 apprenticeship qualification.

Apprentices in the first year could be paid at the apprentice minimum wage. Once over 19 and in the second year,the National min wage for their age applies.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

This would not suit a complete beginner. Previous experience or a level 1 / 2 in vehicle repairs required. You will be working in a busy garage on customer vehicles carrying out tasks such as: 

  • Light vehicle servicing
  • Removing Tyres 
  • Repairing punctures 
  • Wheel balancing
  • Tyres and Brakes
  • Fault Diagnosis on cars and light commercial vehicles using computer equipment and through a process of elimination
  • Removal and replacement of a range of vehicle parts
  • Assisting the other members of the team with more complex tasks
  • Supporting the delivery of MOT Tests
  • Basic servicing, including car health checks
  • Steering and suspension
  • Electrical fault diagnostics
  • Shadowing Technicians
  • Cleaning the workshop
  • Moving vehicles

Course contents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Your training plan

  • You will be working towards your Level 3 motor vehicle service and repair technician (light vehicle) qualification. 
  • This will be a day release delivery. The apprentice will spend 4 days per week at the garage plus one day at college, approx 40 hours. 20% of this time will be off the job learning through college sessions, virtual training and online sessions, this will be supported by assessments that will take place at the work place.
  • The remaining 80% will involve practical hands on work.

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Other in:

  • Full UK licence (grade pass)

  • vehicle based course (grade any)
