You will be working at one of our 5 dairy locations based on your geographic location, specifically Market Drayton Butter Plant. This apprenticeship program is designed to deliver first class Müller professionals for our Quality, R&D, Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement teams.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

The responsibilities of this programme are preformed within the framework of the apprenticeship standard. The degree will cover (key science principles associated with dairy, lean manufacturing techniques and environmental sustainability) the following:

  • Milk production and its chemical composition
  • Milk microbiology and processing conditions that impact the product properties, quality and safety
  • Principles of dairy process design, engineering and level of automation and its impact on plant performance
  • Dairy unit operations and their impacts on the product quality, functionality and product shelf life
  • New product development
  • Legislation and guidelines applicable to manufacture of dairy products
  • Lean manufacturing
  • Environmental sustainability and waste management 
  • Test methods and applications, product quality testing, sensory evaluation, in-line and off-line.
  • Dairy process environment, hygiene, design and control

  • Apply food safety management systems.
  • Apply food and dairy hygiene practice principles.
  • Comply with food safety regulations and procedures.

  • Comply with environmental regulations, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Apply sustainable working practices. For example, efficient use of resources, waste minimisation.
  • Apply quality control processes.
  • Apply extended knowledge of underlying dairy concepts.
  • Identify, review and evaluate, and select scientific techniques, procedures, and methods in the context of new and different areas of work.
  • Apply scientific techniques, procedures, and methods to undertake tasks.
  • Apply engineering concepts and principles to analyse dairy performance.
  • Collect data. Analyse, interpret, and evaluate data, scientific and technology information, concepts, and ideas including use of statistical methods.
  • Apply changes to dairy processing unit operations.
  • Apply problem solving techniques, identifying issues. Propose solutions to problems.
  • Use continuous improvement techniques and make recommendations.
  • Apply project management techniques: planning and prioritising tasks, organising resources, managing stakeholders and risk management.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments.
  • Develop technical written content. For example, operating procedures, working instructions, and reports.
  • Communicate with others for example, colleagues, customers, and stakeholders. Use industry terminology where appropriate.
  • Create and deliver presentations.
  • Negotiate with and influence colleagues or stakeholders; manage conflict.
  • Use information and digital technology.
  • Identify training needs. Coach individuals.

Your training plan

The Dairy Technologist Apprenticeship training will be delivered via blended approach of distance learning and 2 periods of 2 weeks for hands on practical training in a purpose built state of the art training facility in Cheshire. The rest of the time will be spent learning the roles of each function in rotation, putting the know-how to practice and good use to the business - all supported and nurtured by an inspiring workplace mentor.

At the end of the apprenticeship programme you will gain the following awards:

  • Level 5, Apprenticeship in Dairy Technology - with an additional Technical Project also achieve a Foundation Degree in Dairy Technology
  • Level 3 Food Safety
  • Level 3 HACCP
  • Level 3 Health and Safety

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English (grade C/4 or above)
  • Maths (grade C/4 or above)
