Summary

SCWS are seeking Fabrication & Welding Apprentices to learn skills as a Plater/Welder and all skills in the fabrication of steel in a structural steelwork company.

£15,311 a year

We pay our apprentices above the minimum wage and support through paid study days and all college fees.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Daily tasks will include:

Plater/Welder:

  • Training in MIG and TIG welding
  • Assembly of parts into building elements in accordance with drawings
  • Maintenance of production plant
  • Training in use of all fabrication plant
  • You will report to the Works Manager

Course contents
  • Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
  • Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
  • Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
  • Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
  • Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
  • Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.
  • Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Carry out the relevant preparation before starting the joining fabrication activity.
  • Set up, check, adjust and use joining and related equipment.
  • Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

Your training plan

Metal Fabricator Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

  • The successful applicant will attend day release at the College of West Anglia Kings Lynn campus over a period of 3 years to achieve the knowledge, skills and behaviours as identified in the Metal Fabricator standard and assessment plan
  • The apprentice will also complete a portfolio of evidence to support this
  • Within 3 months of completing the required competences, necessary practical skills, and knowledge they will be supported by the college and the employer to complete the end point assessment
  • The mandatory qualification for this will be an EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • 2 other subjects (grade A*-C/9-4)
  • English, maths and science (grade A*-C/9-4)

Other requirements

This apprenticeship is based in a large workshop, the work can be a physically demanding and applicants should be sure that they are happy to work in this environment. Applicants should be able to commute both to our Dereham site and college and be able to prove that their transport arrangements allow them to be on site at the necessary time. Wages paid will be above the minimum wage for Apprenticeship to be discussed at interview.
