Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • You will work as part of our multi-disciplined engineering team delivering projects predominantly in the nuclear defence and decommissioning sectors, gaining experience at all phases of the design lifecycle, from concept through to detailed design for manufacture
  • You will be involved in the planning and executing of engineering and design activities, producing engineering drawings, documentation and calculations using tools such as AutoCAD, Inventor, AR, VR, 3D printing etc.
  • You will study towards a Level 6 Degree qualification with an approved Apprenticeship provider alongside your role

Course contents
  • Work competently and safely in a technical nuclear environment, understand and promote personal responsibility for Health, Safety, Radiation Protection, Environmental Protection, Quality, Security, Safeguards and principles of Risk Management.
  • Utilise mathematical, engineering and scientific tools to provide suitable solutions to nuclear applications.
  • Accurately observe, record and draw conclusions from data and experimental evidence and presentation of findings under supervision.
  • Develop and write technical reports that meet business requirements including the optimisation and continuous improvement of processes and services.
  • Utilise Information Technology (IT) for performing and supporting the business processes including, communications, work co-ordination, task analysis and problem solving.
  • Promote and actively support the application of quality standards relevant to the workplace and organisation.
  • Demonstrate decision making ability commensurate with agreed levels of responsibility.

Your training plan

  • Nuclear Technician Level 4
  • You will work on real-life projects as part of our engineering teams based in the office (4 days) and 1 day at college

  • You will have the opportunity to further develop your inter-personal and communication skills attending company events and representing the company to external parties
  • Our internal Peer Check Cycle programme, aligned with recognised industry accreditations, will further develop your engineering competency levels
  • Continued professional development programmes to achieve Level 6 and beyond

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Maths, English, Science (grade 5)

Desirable qualifications

A Level in:

  • Maths, Science, Engineering or Technology (grade C)
  • Engineering or Technical (grade Merit or Distinction)
