Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Years 1 and 2:
During your first year you will spend time at college completing a Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the foundation qualification of your apprenticeship.
Upon completion, you will return to Leonardo to start your rotational placements within some of the following departments:
Electronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations and other engineering support functions.
During your second year you will attend college on a day release basis to complete a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the knowledge qualification of your apprenticeship and continue with your rotational placements.
Years 3 and 4:
- In your 3rd year you will continue to rotate around different departments, gaining further knowledge of the company and developing your engineering skills. Your 3rd year will also see you through the workplace portfolio phase of your level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the competence qualification of your apprenticeship. For your final year you will specialise in your chosen area, based on your experience throughout your rotational placements you will also complete the End Point Assessment for your apprenticeship in Engineering Technical Support (Apprenticeship Standard Ref: ST0457).
During your apprenticeship, you will:
- Grow your knowledge of an engineering business and what the role of a technician is by being part of an integrated Project Team
- Develop practical skills in engineering and understanding key processes and technologies
- Support early careers activities - our apprentices have the opportunity to work as STEM ambassadors in schools, colleges and universities

Based at Bedford College, this four-year apprenticeship provides a wealth of hands-on learning and development opportunities including a BTEC Level 2 & 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering along with a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Technical Support Technician.
Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability and develop your academic and practical understanding of the engineering design lifecycle by deploying the methods of designing electrical and mechanical systems.
You will undertake a series of three-month placements - covering Mechanical, Electronic, Systems, Software and Quality Engineer - that will train you in the design and development of industry-leading radar and laser systems. Other placements will be laboratory-based, testing and developing cutting-edge PCB assemblies.

GCSE or equivalent in:
- Science, Maths, English (grade 4-9 or A*-C)
