Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- As part of the role, you will be responsible for completing diagnostic tests using manual tools and technological devices, working with clients and co-workers to establish a timeframe for the completion of each inspection or repair in accordance with KPI’s.
- The key duties include supporting with performing maintenance inspections and repairs on all vehicles presented with guidance.
- You will keep the workshop clean and to standard while highlighting to contract management staff all vehicle defects, identifying faults and repairing as needed.
- Other key duties will include undertaking any other ad hoc duties while providing high standards of courteous interaction with all individuals, including visitors and Serco colleagues.
- As you gain more experience, your role will become more challenging and varied with more autonomy to take on tasks through your apprenticeship training provider.

Course contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
- The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

It is essential that you can travel daily to the Serco Workshop to arrive on time for work. As part of the recruitment process you will be required to complete online assessments and you will be required to undergo security checks, which includes a check of criminal records. Being confident and motivated to learn to repair and maintain HGV vehicles with an eye for attention to detail and a basic understanding of procedures along with the willingness to learn are key to be successful in this role.
