Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
During the Engineering Higher Apprenticeship you will develop knowledge, skills and behaviours across a range of different engineering disciplines/placements. During this time you will gain valuable experience within electrical and mechanical engineering environments, which will culminate in you completing an End Point Assessment with a view of becoming an Engineering Technician.
The Engineering Higher Apprenticeship is a 3-year programme where you will spend time in a variety of areas within the business. You will undertake a range of engineering activities and gain valuable experience across the project lifecycle. During the first 2 years you will undertake a HNC in Engineering on a day release basis.
The first 3 months of your apprenticeship will be spent undertaking initial engineering, health and safety training in the Skills Development Centre located in Portsmouth Naval Base. On successful completion of this training you will commence your first placement within the business. During your third and final year, you will complete an End Point Assessment to confirm that you have gained the required knowledge, skills and behaviours, to successfully complete the apprenticeship.
Specific activities could include:
Electrical Engineers will produce engineering drawings, data and documentation in order to facilitate the manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, fault diagnosis, maintenance, overhaul and removal of electrical and data systems on maritime vessels. This covers propulsion machinery, weapons, sensors, and auxiliary systems (such as water, air conditioning, electronic equipment including programmable logic controllers, power generation and distribution).
The role requires knowledge and expertise of the design and use of electrical, electronic and combat systems to ensure safe embodiment of Capability Insertions.
The role involves office-based drawing and document research, along with surveys and validation of systems onboard complex warships.”
