Summary

NP Byrne are seeking an enthusiastic motor vehicle technician with a desire to learn skills in the repair and upkeep of all makes and models of car.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Your apprenticeship will focus on three key areas:

  • Servicing vehicles - working to manufacturers guidelines to ensure the vehicle is running at optimum performance
  • Maintenance - replacing parts and components before they fail
  • Repair - repairing problems that cause vehicle failure

Duties:

  • You will use diagnostic, mechanical and electrical measuring equipment to investigate faults and identify their underlying causes,
  • You will inspect and prepare customers vehicles ready for mechanical work
  • Remove, repair components to the correct specification
  • Contribute to the safe working environment by working within health and safety processes
  • Ensure that admin and customer service duties are completed including updating job cards and providing quotations and estimates.
  • You will shadow qualified technicians to learn first hand how to service, maintain and repair vehicles, as you progress and your confidence and experience grows you will start completing tasks on your own.

Course contents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.
  • Your training plan

    • This programme is delivered via a day release delivery model which means that one day per week, your attendance is required at our engineering campus. This attendance is required during term time only.
    • You will work with expert assessors to develop new knowledge, skills and behaviours within the profession.
    • You will experience a blended learning model.
    • You will gather learning evidence, journals and off-the-job records using your e-portfolio.
    • At the end of the planned learning period, it will be agreed that you are ready to enter 'Gateway' and for your End Point Assessment to be arranged.

    GCSE in:

    • English (grade 4)
    • Maths (grade 4)

    Desirable qualifications

    Other in:

    • Motor Vehicle level 2 (grade Pass)

    To be successful in this role, you must have a genuine interest and enthusiasm for cars. Any projects that you have been part of would be a great thing to discuss at interview (working with family members on cars, maintaining your own car, buying a non road worthy car and getting it road worthy)

    • Upon completion of your apprenticeship you will be a fully qualified Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician.
    • The ideal candidate will be looking to progress onto a permanent, full time position upon completion of their apprenticeship.
