Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

This apprenticeship offers a hands-on role in digital device repair, working closely with a seasoned repair technician to gain skills and experience in diagnosing, repairing, and refurbishing a wide variety of digital devices. The successful apprentice will play an integral role in the repair workflow, customer engagement, and sustainable device practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Device Intake & System Management: Receive devices for repair and log them accurately using a Point of Sale (POS) system to ensure smooth tracking and efficient service.
  • Diagnosis & Repair: Identify issues with both hardware and software, carrying out necessary repairs to meet time and cost efficiency standards for customers.
  • Stock & Repair Tracking: Conduct regular inventory checks for all repair parts and maintain accurate records of repair stages for each device.
  • Sustainability Focus: Refurbish devices to high standards for resale and ensure proper recycling or disposal of items that cannot be economically repaired.
  • Customer Interaction: Engage with customers in-store and via social media, providing updates, handling inquiries, and facilitating smooth repair processes.
  • Issue Escalation: Communicate challenging repairs or customer issues to the supervisor to uphold service quality and brand reputation.

  • Use communication methods such as written, verbal or electronic, using industry terminology.
  • Extract key information to undertake repair process.  
  • Follow all guidelines in line with relevant data protection legislation, ensuring all safety precautions are taken with consumer data.
  • Manage customer expectations.
  • Comply with health and safety and environmental legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Comply with procedures for usage of equipment in accordance with usage guidelines.
  • Assess and interpret risk to inform safe working practices.
  • Analyse, evaluate and advise the client about options for keeping technology alive for longer.
  • Apply environmental and sustainability procedures in compliance with regulations and standards for example, segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Research industry updates, select and implement for the device and provide updates to stakeholders affected by the change.
  • Install relevant software or firmware.
  • Use continuous improvement principles and techniques, to make recommendations and share good practice.
  • Comply with processes in place to reduce Electro-Static Discharge ESD.
  • Maintain own workstation.
  • Use diagnostic tools to interpret faults, including no fault devices.
  • Record required information with accuracy.
  • Interpret manufacturers official repair guidance to decide on the most effective or practical fix for specific devices and shares with stakeholders.
  • Identify physical indicators of fault causes.
  • Replace a main PCB Printed Circuit Board.
  • Plan and prioritise own workload using time management techniques.
  • Comply with repair and refurbishment quality assurance standards.
  • Repair a digital device by applying repair practices and techniques.
  • Replace common user-repairable components in devices.

Your training plan

  • Months 1-6: Virtual training session every other week.
  • Months 7-12: Weekly virtual training sessions.
  • Gateway Entry: At the 12-month mark, apprentices will reach the Gateway Entry checkpoint.
    This structure provides gradual, consistent training support, building skills portfolio progressively toward Gateway Entry.

More training information

  • This apprenticeship is delivered by an experienced training provider specialising in digital IT apprenticeships. The course is structured with a blend of virtual sessions and hands-on learning in the workplace, with assessments and portfolio-building milestones spread throughout the program.
  • During the first six months, apprentices will attend virtual sessions bi-weekly, transitioning to weekly sessions from month seven through to Gateway Entry at 12 months. Each session is designed to support practical learning with industry-relevant scenarios and real-time guidance from expert instructors.
