Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
As a Modern Apprentice in Legal and Democratic Services with South Derbyshire District Council, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of essential services. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience across a variety of workstreams within the council, including Legal Services, Democratic Services, Electoral Services, Licensing, and Land Charges. An average day may include performing administrative tasks, assisting in organising council meetings, and handling enquiries. You will also gain exposure to the democratic process and the functioning of local government, while developing practical business skills.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing administrative and clerical support, such as filing, processing orders, and raising purchase orders, as well as assisting in maintaining records and databases
- Assisting with the preparation for council meetings, elections, and the Annual Canvass, and providing support for related administrative tasks
- Supporting the Legal and Democratic Services team with tasks such as organising seminars and training, arranging travel and accommodation, and coordinating internal meetings
- Assisting in the preparation for inspections, licensing activities, and the administration of the Council’s Local Land Charges function
- Contributing to policy reviews, project work, and information gathering, as well as producing management reports on various aspects of the service
- Updating and maintaining the IT systems used by the department and ensuring compliance with data protection policies
- Undertaking research and supporting the team in resolving tasks and problems by following a logical approach

This apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of work-based assessment and day/block release. The programme will culminate in an End Point Assessment, where all the skills and knowledge gained on the apprenticeship will be formally tested.
