Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- Provide 1:1 support to a secondary-aged student with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), assisting them in developing independence in decision-making
- Assist the student throughout the day with academic tasks and holistic break-out activities
- Support the teacher with general teaching assistant duties, such as writing reports and leading small group lessons

Training
An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

At the end of the Apprenticeship, you will achieve the following:
- Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard with additional SEN units embedded into the training
- Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (if required.)
Additional SEN: This qualification emphasises:
- Exploring the roles and responsibilities of the Special Educational Needs Coordinator
- Understanding the strategies and techniques for supporting children and their families
- Increasing knowledge, skills, and behaviours of SEN codes of practice
The apprenticeship will be delivered via teams each month, with observations carried out in the workplace alongside your job role. There is no day release required for this training.

Beginning as an Alternative Provision in January 2023, we have expanded thanks to our focus on a child-centred, holistic approach to education, prioritising the emotional well-being of our students. Additionally, Lord Gowthorpe's Independent School is an accredited horse riding centre with a farm site that allows students to gain knowledge in horticulture, farm skills, and the care of various animals.
