Southampton Engineering Training Association (SETA) is supporting Precision Fabrications Andover to recruit Metal Fabricator Apprentices to join the team and develop within the organisation. Learn to cut, bend, weld & assemble metal components for a variety of industries ranging from Automotive, Construction, Medical, Electrical & Agricultural.

Pay will increase from year 2 of the apprenticeship to £22,880 (from £7.55 an hour to £11 an hour). The company may occasionally offer a % bonus of pay depending on performance each year.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
Our 4 Year Apprenticeship Programme will see you develop both technically and personally. Gaining hands-on experience using tools & machinery while developing skills for a rewarding career in engineering & manufacturing, with the majority of your first year spent at SETA training centre in Southampton completing some of the following training:
Foundational knowledge units including General Safety and Statutory Requirements
Specialist Welding & Fabrication training including:
- MMA Welding
- MIG, MAG and Fluxed Cored Arc Welding
- TIG Welding
- Sheet Metal Work
- 1 Day a week will be dedicated to the delivery of a BTEC Level 3 in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
Once you’re equipped with your foundation knowledge, you’ll join our friendly team on-site for Year 2 and 3 where you’ll work alongside our teams and start gaining valuable hands-on experience and training to further your understanding and start applying what you’ve learnt. You’ll be assigned a mentor, who will oversee your development and training.

Course contents
- Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
- Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
- Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
- Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
- Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
- Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
- Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
- Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
- Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
- Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
- Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.
- Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
- Carry out the relevant preparation before starting the joining fabrication activity.
- Set up, check, adjust and use joining and related equipment.
- Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

Your training plan
Our Apprentices will undertake a Metal Fabricator, Level 3 (A level) Apprenticeship Standard. This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA in Southampton.
You will also begin a technical certificate (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week over two academic years. After your initial training at SETA, you will be with your employer working on developing your skills in relation to your job role. And will be working towards your End Point Assessment.

Other requirements
Our Apprentice/s will be based at Andover, but candidates will be required to travel to SETA in Southampton for 20 weeks during the first year of the apprenticeship, and for day-release courses for the remainder of the first year as well as the second year. Full training will be given but we expect our Apprentices to maintain our rigorous standards.

After this apprenticeship
Upon successful completion of the Level 3 Metal Fabricator apprenticeship, the candidate will have the opportunity to progress into a more senior role, taking full responsibility for fabricating products independently.
With proven leadership and consistent results, further career paths such as estimating, design, or management may be explored based on individual strengths.
