Summary

Apprentice Security engineer is required to install Intruder Alarms, CCTV & Access Control, plus Fire Alarm systems (college only for fire alarm systems). Full training given, including college block release. A full UK driving licence is an advantage.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

You will be trained to install Containment, Intruder Alarms, CCTV and Access Control.

This is an exciting and rewarding role for someone with a passion for engineering. 

Duties include:

  • Installing appropriate equipment, including cameras, devices, cabling and containment.
  • Adhering to safe working practices & being able to take instructions.
  • Using power tools, lifting, carrying & working at height on either mobile scaffolding or MEWPS, along with providing excellent quality workmanship.  
  • Working away from home on project sites across the UK.

Course contents
  • Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and apply control measures.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
  • Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
  • Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
  • Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
  • Carries out risk assessments.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.

Your training plan

The successful candidate will be fully supported by a workplace mentor while undertaking the Level 3 Fire, Emergency & Security Systems Technician apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship lasts 3 years and takes place at Banham Academy in Earlsfield, London. Training is delivered via block release with each block lasting 5 days. There are fifteen blocks in all.

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4/C or above)
  • Maths (grade 4/C or above)

Other requirements

This is a field based role and working away from home is often required. We may sometimes need to work evenings/weekends to complete a job. When working outside of London and the southeast, accommodation is provided.

After this apprenticeship

On successful completion of the FESS apprenticeship, we aim to offer a full-time position as a qualified engineer within our company.
