Summary

Our 36-month Pipefitter Apprenticeship programme is an immersive learning experience, blending technical knowledge with practical training to help you gain the qualifications you need for a successful career. In this role, you’ll develop the skills and experience needed to achieve Engineering Technician status and become a qualified pipefitter.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

As a Pipefitter Apprentice, you will:

  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards
  • Shape and profile pipes and components using power tools, mechanical cutting machines, and other equipment
  • Learn how to work with various materials, such as carbon, stainless, and other alloys
  • Prepare and fit piping systems according to engineering drawings and specifications
  • Collaborate with pipe welders and across the wider business on various projects
  • Receive specific training tailored to nuclear industry requirements

In addition to the above, you’ll also receive training on manual handling techniques and working in potentially hazardous environments.

Engineering construction pipefitter (level 3)

Equal to A level

Course contents
  • Comply with appropriate health and safety, risk and quality requirements,
  • Correctly select and safely use tools and equipment for the fabrication, assembly, installation and decommissioning of pipework components and systems,
  • Plan, organise and undertake the fabrication, assembly, installation, maintenance and decommissioning of pipework components and systems,
  • Read, interpret and apply engineering drawing information,
  • Shape pipework components using hand and power tools to cut, drill, shape and finish components to the required tolerance, specification and standard,
  • Assemble and install pipework using the appropriate methods, techniques and equipment in accordance with the specification including welded, threaded, bolted and clamped jointing solutions,
  • Ensure the integrity of joints in accordance with specifications, in line with specified quality procedures and to precise tolerances,
  • Undertake the testing and inspection of the fabricated and/or installed pipework using the appropriate techniques,
  • Work with others and contribute to effective working relationships within an Engineering Construction environment,
  • Apply techniques for the temporary or permanent removal of an engineering construction piping related system or component,
  • Communicate by keeping others informed about work plans or activities which may affect them and seek assistance from others without causing undue disruption to normal work activities.

Your training plan

The apprenticeship follows a 3 year programme, with the first year spent off the job at CATCH in Stallingborough. This would be Monday-Friday 8am- 4pm.

The remainder of the apprenticeship is then completed onsite. Where you will be deployed out to PJD Client sites around the UK, with possible opportunities to work outside the UK if the need arises.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English Language and/or Literature (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Science (grade 4)

Other requirements

Driving licence is beneficial but not essential but you must be able to make your own way to CATCH then to PJD.
