We are a growing and passionate civil engineering design company, providing creative and effective design solutions to the infrastructure sector. We work with other companies such as TFL, Network Rail, UKPNS, Linxon, Murphy, Hitachi Energy and Amco Giffein to help them deliver sustainable design solutions.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

You will:

  • Help to deliver innovative, sustainable, efficient, safe, practical and intelligent structural engineering solutions on all infrastructure projects  from initial concept design stage to detailed design and construction design support and other activities appropriate to the stage and type of project. You will be exposed to civil and structural design at different stages of the projects, to help start your career in this field
  • Support colleagues in undertaking multi-disciplinary design and co-ordination project deliverables
  • Produce project information as needed
  • Record lessons learnt opportunities with the Engineering Manager so they can be avoided again in the future
  • Help ensure health & safety is considered at all stages of the design process so that designs produced minimise risk during construction
  • Help to produce computer models of projects as appropriate
  • Attend site visits with senior engineers to help develop an understanding of projects and work required
  • Assist with general business management activities, reviews, enhancing efficiency and optimisation where appropriate

Course contents
  • Apply appropriate civil engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how, to civil engineering and the construction process
  • Apply key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis, and evaluation to support the delivery of civil engineering models, designs, and technical solutions
  • Operate appropriate software packages for data gathering and analysis, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM), to create technical drawings, models and designs using relevant conventions and engineering terminology
  • Apply statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures, and regulations in the civil engineering environment, using risk management processes, procedures, and documentation
  • Support and contribute to the production or modification of civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and procedures and codes of practice
  • Apply environmental policies and sustainable principles in civil engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions and plan for wider sustainability
  • Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with quality assurance, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations
  • Consider equality, diversity and inclusion in the delivery of civil engineering projects
  • Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data
  • Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Your training plan

You will join a team and be assigned a line manager who will guide, support and help to develop you. You will be included to all the CPD activities that we undertake on a regular basis.

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 5)

There will be the ability to progress your career into civil/structural engineering with us. As employees develop, many of them work towards becoming chartered with the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers.
