Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
- Work with Essex young carers and their families to identify priorities, support needs, interventions and goals and developing and implementing strategies for securing these
- Use assessment and monitoring to motivate young carers and their families to achieve a shared and mutually agreed support plan/ contract
- Take up referrals and work with Essex young carers in order to identify, understand and meet their needs, with an emphasis on promoting positive outcomes
- Work with Essex young carers in line with the agreed model, ensuring that the level of support meets the identified need including one to one support, peer group support, telephone support, advocacy, provision of information, signposting, training opportunities and workshops
- Promote young carers self-awareness, confidence and encourage their involvement in the design of their young carers service and support them in evaluating the impact of the service upon their own situation
- Provide targeted outreach and awareness raising activities to other agencies to support the increased identification of Essex young carers including presentations, workshops and events
- Pro-actively work in partnership with other agencies including educational settings and adult services to ensure ongoing support to young carers, particularly at points of transition and to enable Essex young carers to continue their education, employment or training
- Support the development and facilitation of Essex young carers networks and forums to ensure that the voice of young carers is heard and that they are in a position to be able to shape and influence the service
- Ensure that the Essex County Council policies, procedures and practice for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people are implemented
- Work flexibly and deliver services as directed
- Specific individual and shared targets and objectives are defined annually within the performance management framework

- Facilitate activities and techniques to use with young people that promote self-confidence and build self-esteem and resilience
- Reflect individually and through supervision on practice in line with daily tasks to enhance the support young people receive
- Monitor and record the outcomes of own practice to identify areas for development and improvement
- Appropriately manage behaviour boundaries in line with organisational policies
- Plan youth support work programmes and sessions
- Lead youth support work programmes and sessions
- Evaluate youth support work programmes and sessions
- Enable young people to express their views, aspirations, needs and concerns appropriately in line with youth support work principles
- Identify, appropriately challenge and act upon oppressive or discriminatory attitudes, behaviours and situations
- Support young people to participate in planning, organising, delivering and evaluating youth work activities and programmes, and engaging on issues of importance to them
- Embeds in own practice a commitment to the rights of young people
- Apply safeguarding procedures and protocols
- Work within the parameters of organisational, local and national health and safety, child protection, data protection and equalities policies and procedures
- Participate in risk assessments and manage risk and risk benefits within the workplace
- Record all health and safety risks and take the correct actions to ensure the safety of all young people
- Complete administrative responsibilities e.g., signing in young people, risk assessments and recording activities
- Manage budgets and resources
- Manage individuals in line with organisational procedures
- Work with and maintain professional behaviour boundaries when working with young people

GCSE in:
