Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

You will undertake varied accounting and administrative duties, some of which are:

  • Post bank transactions and reconcile bank and cash accounts to Business Central
  • Credit control and reconciliation of sales ledgers for trading companies
  • Handling customer and internal queries
  • Post customer remittances
  • Issue customer statements for trading companies
  • Assist with day-to-day activity of the Accounts Payable function including Receipt of purchase invoices, verification and record of transactions
  • Using Microsoft Packages, in particular Word, Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Ad-hoc finance duties
  • Ensuring that the Policies of the company are observed, and that good practice is encouraged, particularly in the areas of Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and confidentiality 

As part of your contract of employment completion of the Apprenticeship Training Programme forms part of your duties as well as helping your personal and professional development; the requirements to complete the programme are as follows:

  • Attend and be punctual for all induction session, taught lessons, work-based training/support meetings
  • Complete all required assignments
  • Build up your portfolio of evidence on-going during your apprenticeship programme
  • Access support from your tutor/assessor and manager as and when required

  • Record transactional data.
  • Use the organisation’s standard tools and processes to examine data to identify transactional issues such as, reconciliations and inconsistencies between invoices.
  • Recognise and rectify routine errors, escalating as necessary.
  • Plan and review accounting and finance tasks.
  • Communicate with stakeholders to deliver accurate and timely results, avoiding jargon, using language tailored to the audience and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
  • Use finance and accounting software packages to accurately input and manage data to contribute to routine accounting tasks.
  • Handle data and digital technology in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.

Your training plan

The Accounts/Finance Assistant is responsible for assisting the team of accountants with accounting duties. These can vary massively depending on the team structure and size of business.

An Accounts/Finance Assistant’s work could include basic bookkeeping activities, working with sales and purchase ledgers, running calculations to ensure that records and payments are correct, recording of cash and data entry.

Accounts/Finance Assistants can work in almost any sector. Potential employers include corporate businesses, sole traders, partnerships, Public Sector, not-for-profit organisations and educational institutions. Accounts/Finance Assistants may work inhouse for an organisation or they might work for accountancy firm, bookkeeping practice, Shared Service provider, self-employed or on behalf of several different clients.

We will be delivering the industry recognised AAT (Association of Accounting Technician) Certificate in Accounting Level 2 as part of this apprenticeship standard. 
 
This qualification comprises four mandatory units:

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping
  • Principles of Bookkeeping Controls
  • Principles of Costing
  • The Business Environment

You will be required to attend Kirklees College, The Waterfront, Huddersfield one day per week throughout this apprenticeship programme.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Maths and English (grade 4/C or above or equivilent)

Desirable qualifications

Other in:

  • Accounting (grade Level 2)
  • Knowledge of Outlook, Excel and Word (grade Pass, Merit or Distinction)
