Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
On completion, the Scaffolder will be able to:
- Make adequate provision for the safety of themselves, the workforce, the public affected by scaffolding work and future users of the scaffold structure by working to the relevant British and European Standards, National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) guidance e.g. Technical Guidance (TG)20 (Good Practice Guidance for Tube and fitting Scaffolding Safety Guidance, SG4, (Preventing Falls in Scaffolding Operations) SG6 (Manual Handling in the Scaffolding Industry) and statutory regulations
- Carry, raise, lower and use scaffold materials correctly and safely on a working platform
- Visually inspect, select, assemble and install prefabricated beams into scaffold structures
- Support scaffold protection fans according to requirements of current industry practice
- Erect scaffolds on pavements and public places safely and correctly, with regard to Local Authority regulations
- Install spurs and rakers within the correct operating angles. Attach check fittings, droppers and puncheons in the correct positions to scaffolds
- Install anchor ties and other specialist fixings to the manufacturer’s recommendations
- Select, space, install and test the correct number of ties to restrain sheeted and unsheeted scaffolds to current industry practices
- Determine the material requirements for independent and putlog scaffolds with returns, towers and birdcages up to three lifts high.
- Lay out materials, set out scaffolds and overcome obstacles to erect scaffolds safely
- Determine the materials required to set out, erect and dismantle in a safe sequence
- Inspect gin wheels for serviceability, position and fix securely, reeve, rope, tie knots and correctly use gin wheel to haul up scaffold tubes, boards and fittings. Take down gin wheel and coil rope
- Inspect basic scaffolds prior to handover

- Follow procedures in line with health and safety regulations, standards, and scaffold guidance (quality).
- Comply with risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
- Inspect and select serviceable scaffold materials, components, and tools before use and escalate defects.
- Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
- Carry, raise, lower, scaffold materials on a working platform.
- Move and store components tools and equipment.
- Install scaffold cantilevered structural components according to requirements of industry guidance and manufacturer’s instructions.
- Protect others within the working vicinity. For example, the public through signage, barriers.
- Install spurs and supports on cantilever sections.
- Select, space, and install the correct number of ties to restrain un-sheeted scaffolds to industry guidance and manufacturer’s instructions.
- Determine the component requirements for independent scaffolding.
- Organise materials to operate within the industry and manufacturers configurations and tolerances.
- Use lifting equipment safely to haul up scaffold components and equipment to working platform.
- Lay out materials, set out scaffolds to erect and dismantle scaffolds in a safe sequence.
- Inspect scaffolds prior to hand over.
- Use access and work at height equipment in accordance with training, relevant regulations and employer’s and manufacturer’s instructions.
- Erect and dismantle independent with cantilever section to a maximum height of 2m working platform.
- Erect and dismantle independent scaffolds, with features for example, towers, birdcages, chimney stacks, loading bays with or without beams, truss outs with beams, splays, and bridging sections with beams and gantry scaffolds.
- Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers.
- Apply team working principles.
- Interpret information from drawings and specifications.
- Follow equity, diversity and inclusion guidelines.

Your training plan
- You will attend college over a 2-year period growing from an apprentice to a fully qualified scaffolder whilst learning on the job achieving a fully recognised Level 2 Scaffold NVQ qualification
- Functional skills if required
- You will be attending construction college midlands, every two to three months on a two-week block release

Role will be physical and working outside at times in all weathers.
About this company
We carry out a large number of overcladding projects where a new insulated roofing system is installed over an existing poor roof. Typically the existing roof lights are replaced if they are in place with a new outer roof light panel being installed over the newly replaced roof lights, this then allows natural daylight into the building and greatly improves the light within the building. A new rail system is then fixed through the existing roof and into the original structure ready to receive the new roof sheeting. The roof is then insulated before the outer roof sheets are installed. New liners are then installed into any existing valley gutters to form a fully encapsulated eave and gutter area. Finally the new profile steel outer sheeting is installed along with all relevant flashings in order to complete the new overclad system.
