Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

Duties of your role may include but are not restricted to:

  • Fabricating all types of signage – Acrylic, ACM, Illuminated Lettering etc. for brands such as “YOURS” “HMV” etc.
  • Basic wiring/electrical work for LED illuminated signage.
  • Sign Fitting & Installation when necessary - Fitting of various signs internally and externally.
  • Vinyl application to various substrates including contour cut vinyl and vehicle wraps.
  • Using state of the art UV Canon printers for both vinyl printing and flatbed printing.
  • Operating CNC Router Machine to cut various materials for signage production.

  • Interpret information, for example customer briefs, specifications and work instructions.
  • Conduct site survey.
  • Calculate costs and prepare quotations.
  • Plan and schedule work.
  • Prepare for signage work.
  • Use graphic design software to design signage.
  • Create pre-fabrication files/instructions.
  • Select and use materials and components.
  • Assemble signs.
  • Trim, clean and add fixing features to signage such as eyelets, hinges and brackets, as required.
  • Protect materials and signs to prevent damage during manufacture, transportation and storage.
  • Apply, install or erect signs.
  • Check signage materials and products against quality requirements.
  • Identify and document risks and hazards in the workplace; advise on and apply control measures.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Comply with organisational and statutory environmental and sustainability considerations: safe disposal of waste, recycling of materials and efficient use of resources.
  • Select, set up, complete pre-checks and operate sign-making machinery, tools and equipment.
  • Maintain work area, tools and equipment for example, charge batteries and sharpen blades.
  • Use access equipment in the installation process, for example ladders, fixed and mobile platforms.
  • Communicate with colleagues and/or stakeholders – verbal, written or electronic; use industry terminology.
  • Complete documentation for example job sheets, maintenance records.
  • Rectify or report issues.

Your training plan

Course Duration:

  • 18 months training period
  • 4 months End-Point Assessment (EPA) period
  • Total duration: 22 months

Delivery Format:

  • Online training sessions: 3.5 hours per lesson (depending on the duty being covered)
  • Additional functional skills training (if required): 3 hours online lesson, per subject (Maths and English) plus final exam
  • Workplace-based learning and practical application
     

Apprenticeship Standard: The programme follows the approved Signage Technician Apprenticeship Standard, ensuring that apprentices meet industry requirements. Apprentices will develop their competency in key areas such as:

  • Reviewing customer briefs and conducting site surveys
  • Designing signage using CAD software
  • Preparing costings and quotations
  • Manufacturing and assembling signs using a range of materials and techniques
  • Installing signage safely and efficiently
  • Ensuring quality assurance and compliance with industry standards

Duties Covered in Online Training: The following duties will be taught during the online sessions, with content tailored to the complexity of each duty:

  • Review customer brief & conduct site surveys
  • Organise work activities & resources
  • Prepare signage illustrations, costings & quotes
  • Design signage using CAD software
  • Prepare pre-fabrication files & instructions
  • Manufacture signs using machinery & tools
  • Perform finishing operations on signs
  • Apply, install, or erect signage
  • Communicate with stakeholders
  • Conduct quality assurance checks & resolve issues

More training information

Functional Skills (if required):

  • If the apprentice has not yet achieved Level 2 in English and Maths, they must complete additional training.
  • Each subject (maths and English) requires an extra 3-hour lesson per week, plus end exam.
