Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

  • Meeting, greeting and caring for patients in a polite and professional manner at all times
  • Working closely with the dentist or hygienist in a professional and appropriate manner
  • Providing chair-side assistance during all dental procedures, using four-handed dentistry and remaining a step ahead at all times
  • Updating computer records, patient's personal files, taking notes and recording clinical assessments
  • Cleaning the surgery to a high standard, maintaining strict cross infection control and adhering to policies and standards as set by the GDC in line with The Health Technical Memoranda
  • Preparing instruments and materials before and during treatments and maintaining stock control
  • Re-processing re-usable items in the correct manner to ensure sterilisation has been appropriately achieved

Course contents
  • Advise the prescribing dentist on appropriate dental devices based on dentist input, while recognising oral limitations and their effect on devices. Evaluate, for individual patients, the need for more complex treatment and seek advice from the dentist or more experienced Dental Technicians as appropriate.
  • Design, manufacture, assess, repair, modify and provide biomechanically sound custom- made dental devices in the following three areas: 1.Prosthetic Device Manufacture (Dentures) Design and manufacture complete and partial removable prosthesis, including the provision of custom made impression trays; 2.Conservation Device Manufacture (Crown/Bridge) Produce models and dies for conservation work, Design and manufacture single metallic and tooth coloured restorations, Create substructures for bridgework and apply tooth coloured materials for permanent restorations; 3.Orthodontic Device Manufacture (Braces) Produce models for Orthodontic case study purposes and appliance construction, Design and manufacture removable, functional and fixed orthodontic appliances.
  • Aware of the basic procedures used in design and manufacture of custom made devices (including CAD/CAM & IT Solutions).
  • Assess impressions, models and finished devices as well as the fitness for purpose of devices and propose alternatives where necessary, in line with patient prescription, and formally record these decisions as for MDD requirements.
  • Can review and Quality Assure the devices.
  • Aware of basic procedures for the use of implants, milling and precision attachments as used with various forms of custom made dental restorations.
  • Communicate effectively with and about patients, their representatives and the rest of the dental team. Handle complaints effectively and within GDC guidelines.
  • Manage safety, infection control and decontamination risks around the dental laboratory in keeping with current regulations.

Your training plan

Level 3 Advanced Dental Nurse Diploma offers employment within a dental practice which is accredited by City & Guilds. It enables you to develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed to work competently in all aspects of clinical responsibilities in dentistry.

Your qualification will also provide you with the relevant qualification to apply for professional registration as a dental nurse with the General Dental Council (GDC).

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • Maths and English (grade 4)

Other requirements

You will need to have a keen interest in becoming a dental nurse and not be put off by the sight of blood and saliva, you will also be standing for long periods of time. You will be required to have a DBS check and be vaccinated against Hepatitis B.
