Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
The Operations Technician Apprentice will provide support to our Production team in the end-to-end process of the manufacturing, assembling, inspecting, testing and repairing of our mechanical seal products.
Our Production Team based in Slough are now looking for Operations Technician Apprentices to join us this July. You might be a school leaver or someone who would like to retrain into another career. As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to learn from our experts and rotate around our Production Team picking up the skills and knowledge you need to play a crucial role in the manufacturing, assembly, testing, overhauling and repairing of our dry gas seals. You will spend time in our Machine and Lapping workshops and be given a mini project to work on using Lean methodologies.
Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain lapping and CNC machines to produce precision-finished components.
- Masking/Grooving/Spin testing of Mating Rings.
- Perform precise measurements using specialised tools and equipment eg Optical and mechanical inspection.
- Interpret technical drawings and work instructions to meet product specifications.
- Perform all necessary duties required to safely assemble and test dry gas seals.
- Install and set up seals into appropriate test rigs.
- Assist in preparing drawings for assembly/disassembly tools and fixtures.
- Read instrumentation, record data accurately.

Your training plan
As part of this apprenticeship, you will study with Newbury College working towards the Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship Standard which will give you a Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Operations. You are required to attend Newbury College (Monks Lane, West Berkshire, RG14 7TD) one day a week during Term Time for one academic year. There may be the opportunity to progress onto a higher level of Apprenticeship upon successful completion.
In addition to the support you will receive from the John Crane Production Team, you will also have the support of a Development Coach from Newbury College.
Your Development Coach will monitor your progress and will hold regular reviews with you (these will either be held remotely or at your workplace). At the end of your Apprenticeship, you will be required to take an End Point Assessment to show your competency in the required Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours.
By the end of your Apprenticeship, you will have completed the Level 2 Engineering Operative Apprenticeship Standard.
More training information
Please note: Any apprentices aged 16-18 who do not have the equivalent of a Level 1 Functional Skill in English and/or Maths will be required to pass Level 1 before they can complete their apprenticeship. Functional Skills classes will take place during the one day a week in college. Apprentices aged 19+ are exempt from needing to pass Functional Skills but can work towards it as part of their apprenticeship if they or their employer wants them to. This will be discussed and agreed as part of your enrolment.
