Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual to join our Engineering Team. The successful candidate will be designing, commissioning, installing and maintaining Industrial Automation and Control solutions and working on some of the most iconic and challenging engineering projects in the UK and worldwide.

Wage
£17,250 a year

As you progress, gain practical experience and increase your academic knowledge, your salary will be reviewed annually and adjusted to the appropriate level.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Fairfields provides industrial automation and control solutions across various sectors using electrical, electronic and programmable systems. We’re continuously looking into new technologies and trends. We are already working with IoT devices, cyber-security solutions, augmented reality and advanced software design.

As an Electrical Engineering Apprentice, you will be designing, commissioning and maintaining systems and solutions across a wide range of sectors. You will be involved in designing and implementing hardware and software, project planning, producing complex CAD drawings, operating and maintenance manuals. You will assist with control panel testing and commissioning and will provide service and call out support to our customers. 

You will be part of a team installing and maintaining critical infrastructure where you could be involved in:

  • Flood defence schemes
  • Aerospace facilities
  • Moving bridges and structures
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Roller coasters and leisure rides
  • Pharmaceutical facilities

Training

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Course contents
  • How to comply with statutory requirements and stringent organisational safety requirements
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Producing Electrical or Electronic Drawings using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) system
  • Preparing and using lathes, milling and other general or specialist machines and High Tech equipment
  • Wiring and testing electrical equipment, assembling and testing electronic circuits
  • Using computer software packages to assist with engineering activities
  • Producing engineering project plans
  • Maintaining and improving electrical equipment and systems
  • Project management in undertaking engineering activities
  • Producing and working to engineering specifications and briefs, presenting and technical problem solving
  • Scheduling and managing engineering activities
  • Electrical and electronic product manufacturing and testing
  • Demonstrating technical and commercial management in planning and managing tasks and resources

Your training plan

The Level 6 Apprenticeship programme provides day release to Sheffield Hallam University. This enables you to access education up to degree level without the need for a student loan, so you can earn while you learn. We sponsor you throughout your apprenticeship and in return, you receive a competitive salary. We provide ongoing support and mentoring throughout the programme to ensure you are on track to becoming a qualified Electrical Engineering Apprentice. 

Upon completion of your Apprenticeship, you will attain a BEng (Honours) Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology.

You will need one of the following to apply: 

  • 96 UCAS points from 3 A levels (we accept General Studies)
  • 112 UCAS points with at least 64 from 2 A levels or equivalent BTEC
  • Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2
  • A completed level 3 apprenticeship

More training information

You will also spend time learning about each company department, gaining hands-on experience in design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and service support for control and automation systems and Industrial ICT solutions.

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • Maths and English (grade C or 4 or above)

A Level or equivalent in:

  • Maths/Science/Engineering/Comp Science/Technology (grade BBC)

BTEC or equivalent in:

  • BTEC Extended Diploma in science/technology (grade DMM)

Other in:

  • Combination of quals, but must include maths (grade 112 UCAS points minimum)

Full driving licence (or learning to drive). Willing & able to travel/work away (UK & abroad). Security clearance/DBS check. Fluent in English. Eligible & authorised to work in UK. To meet clearance requirements, you need to have the right to live & work in UK, resident in the UK for last 3 years. Live no more than 1 hour from Head Office DN22 7WF.
