Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
- To implement the requirements of the university-wide fire safety strategy and to assist in the planning of university’s fire safety activities under the direction of the Fire Safety Manager, delivering a positive fire safety culture
- To assist the Fire Safety Manager in the development and review of a range fire risk assessments, policies and procedures on fire safety, ensuring legal compliance and good practice
- To develop a skill set to allow them to undertake a range of fire safety monitoring activities to assure the university on fire safety compliance
- To develop a skill set to deliver a range of professional advisory and training services on the range of fire safety and emergency planning issues affecting the university, supporting the university community
- To participate and contribute to the work of the wider Health and Safety Team

Course contents
- Carry out an inspection/audit of complex premises and venues and assess the risks and evaluate the level of fire safety management.
- Identify and constructively challenge non-compliance with the fire safety order and other relevant legislation.
- Produce fire safety reports, formal and informal correspondence, statutory notices and plans according to organisational policies and procedures.
- Identify safeguarding issues, such as hoarding, child sexual exploitation, slavery, vulnerability etc. and take appropriate action in accordance with organisational policies.
- Evaluate risk levels for yourself, others and the environment and take appropriate action to ensure health and safety is maintained.
- Apply British Standards, guidance and best practice to ensure compliance with fire safety legislation in the build environment.
- Work with other agencies, such as local and national regulators.
- Demonstrate clear communication skills verbally and in writing, with the ability to interact with a wide range of audiences, being persuasive and confident.
- Evaluate fire safety design submissions and fire protection systems.
- Assess fire safety concerns, deliver fire safety advice as required and make decisions to instigate improvements.
- Respond to enquiries and requests from other organisations, in accordance with the Primary Authority.

- Virtual tutor-led classroom delivery involving one-to-one and group activities

More training information
This is a hybrid programme consisting of on-the-job training and online learning. Learning will take place via a learning platform, which includes self-study and classroom-delivered content. Learning and study time will be at least 6-hours per week and delivered flexibly across the working week and will include some blocks of week-long classroom learning delivered remotely, to maximise your development.

Other requirements
You must have lived in the UK and/or EU for at least 3 years before the start date of the course, have the right to work in the UK. You will not be eligible if you already hold a qualification at the same/higher level in the subject or have extensive knowledge in the subject, and not be currently undertaking any other government-funded training.
