Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

  • To set and operate a number of manual and CNC machine tools, including Gear cutting machinery (both Hobbing and Shaping), vertical and horizontal machining Centres, Lathes and multi-axis, multi-functional machines and Grinding machines to produce parts to the required standard and within prescribed times.
  • They will also be required to program (where applicable) the aforementioned as and when required.
  • They will need to have an understanding and appreciation of time constraints and the effect of overrunning from both a commercial and planning aspect.
  • To understand and interpret engineering drawings, including GD&T and to use a range of standard and special measuring equipment, as well as working closely with QC to achieve high ‘First off’ pass rates and to liaise with QC to resolve issues and eliminate repeat failures.
  • To have an understanding of both cutting tools (including Grinding Wheels) and component materials and their effect on productivity. The importance of correct tool selection, an understanding of cutting tool conditions including rigidity, speeds, feeds, lubrication and their application and effect. Also, to understand tool failure and to recognise causes and take appropriate action to rectify them.
  • To understand and apply safe and appropriate workholding methods and techniques to satisfy component requirements, including manual and automatic chucks, vices, direct clamping (to machine tables) and special jigs and fixtures.
  • All of the above have to be carried out whilst observing all appropriate H&S regulations.
  • To perform general engineering departmental duties when required, including modifications, preparation of sales literature and artwork, operating and assembly instructions etc.

  • Engineering Technician - Apprenticeship Standard.
  • Company Training Plan.
  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering Foundation Competencies (full time at college for Year 1).
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge (1 day per week for 2 years at college).
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering - Development Competence (workplace).
  • Level 2 Functional Skills - Maths (if required).
  • Level 2 Functional Skills - English (if required).
  • End Point Assessment.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • At least numerical grades inc English and Maths (grade 4 and above)
