Summary

The role of the Process function is to develop manufacturing capability to enable the business to deliver volume from product concepts. Once a product concept has been signed off, Process will work across all functions and the customer to produce product in line with food safety and technical standards, H&S, Financial and Commercial expectations.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

You will have a crucial role in delivering successful product validations in accordance to Bakkavor and customer principles in a fast paced challenging environment in line with business requirements and opportunities.

  • You will gain a clear understanding of Managing trials: To deliver trials against the plan, in line with the business critical paths, using a problem solving approach ensuring issues are captured and communicated across multiple functions, with an awareness of the budget.
  • You will be part of controlling Raw Materials and Packaging: Management of raw materials and packaging on a continuous basis, ensuring trials are completed as per the trial plan and in line with critical path while taking into consideration the process budget. Proactively communicating potential issues which may impact the critical path. Ensures all materials have RM approval status or appropriate concession for trials.
  • The role will involve customer Management: Facilitating customer panels (internal and external) in readiness for customer approval, ensuring they are in compliance with Business and customer expectations.
  • You will gain an understanding of Factory Process Monitoring: Developing a supportive function to stakeholders, with a pragmatic, problem solving approach to ensure all relevant information collected to input in business systems. Post launch review incorporating possible cost reduction opportunities, ensuring procedural compliance.

Course contents
  • Undertake and direct production activities and operations.
  • Propose, undertake, manage and coordinate changes to the product, production operations, processes and equipment, to improve productivity, efficiency, quality and sustainability.
  • Solve problems - predict and prevent failures through the analysis of data and information.
  • Manage resources effectively to ensure their availability and the efficient running of department in line with organisational procedures.
  • Deliver cost achievements against budget targets.
  • Plan resources to support variations in production schedules.
  • Use KPIs as the basis of the continuous improvement cycle for quality, cost and volume achievement using lean operational and product improvement techniques.
  • Undertake and manage quality resolutions as well as volume problem resolution.
  • Manage health, safety and the environment within area of responsibility, ensuring staff are compliant with all requirements and driving improvements.
  • Conduct workplace risk assessments, manage near-miss or similar processes, conduct investigations as necessary.
  • Use project management tools to plan, organise and manage resources, to monitor progress, identify risks and mitigation.
  • Recruit the right people into the right job.
  • Develop, build and motivate teams by identifying strengths and enabling training and development within the workplace.
  • Recognise excellence, effectively manage performance, discipline, attendance, grievance.
  • Manage industrial relations and equality and diversity.
  • Support development through coaching and mentoring.
  • Leading and communicating the management of change.
  • Provide clear direction and leadership, giving open and honest feedback. Apply and adapt own leadership style to different production situations and people.
  • Delegate and enable delivery though others.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across different disciplines. Negotiate and influence. Manages conflict.
  • Identify and share good practice, work collaboratively.
  • Utilise specialist advice and support to deliver plans.
  • Communicate effectively (verbal, non-verbal, written, digital) in manner relevant to the target audience.
  • Chair meetings and present (formally and informally) using a range of media. Listen actively, challenge, give feedback.
  • Analyse data/information to compellingly and succinctly present information to drive management decisions.

Your training plan

  • You will attain a Level 4 Process Leader Apprenticeship Standard with further progression encouraged up to Degree Level. 
  • Full support and training will be provided to help you progress quickly. Depending on the site, the scheme may offer placements within a factory-based role with responsibility for a team, running production lines, quality and output costs. 
  • You will also take part in a soft skills development programme.
     

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English + three others (grade A - C or 9 - 4)
  • Maths (grade A - C or 9 - 5)

A Level in:

  • Science or Food Technology (grade A - C)
