Summary

Joining our team will mean working on our sites in and around the Midlands. The estimating department is responsible for producing the total estimated cost for building projects in a set timeframe, whilst in competition with other building contractors. You will work closely with the planning, design and production team.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

As part of the tendering process, the estimator will be responsible for assembling design information and producing quantities (take-offs) that are then utilised for producing cost estimates of the various elements of the building. These are then collated, along with other project costs, to produce an overall tender cost estimate which is then included as part of the tender submission document to the client.

As an estimator, you will interact with various departments within their own organisation, as outlined above, as well as external organisations including:

  • Supply chain (subcontractors and suppliers) – provide costs for the various building elements.
  • Design team (architects and engineers) – produce the design for the project.
  • Cost consultants – cost advisors working for the client who will analyse the estimator’s pricing information.
  • Clients – end user of the building.

Roles & Responsibilities of an Estimator:

  • Site visits to understand the geographical location, site restraints and logistics.
  • Reviewing new tender information.
  • Understanding and outlining submission requirements following the receipt of new tenders.
  • Production of papers for use in tender gateways as part of the estimating process.
  • Identifying supply chain for various projects.
  • Supply chain enquiries - collating design information (including drawings and specification) to be sent out to the supply chain.
  • Obtaining quotes from the supply chain.
  • Utilise pricing software for inputting supply chain quotes.
  • Producing detailed supply chain cost comparisons.
  • Ability to understand and work within budget constraints.
  • Preparing cost summaries for senior management.
  • Producing cost submissions for clients.
  • Presenting project estimates to the senior management team and clients.
  • Research the cost of labour, plant and materials.
  • Maintaining records of tender information and gateways throughout the tender process in line with company procedures.

Course contents
  • Information management - Provide data, information and advice for clients relevant to the surveying discipline.
  • Health and safety - Recommend solutions to ensure safe and secure working environments.
  • Construction technology - Provide advice relating to the construction technology of buildings and their materials.
  • Law - Negotiate and agree terms for acquisition/disposal of property, standard forms of building contracts or other property related contracts and liaise with legal advisers.
  • Consultancy - Manage instructions from engagement to completion.
  • Building surveys – Undertake inspections and surveys and provide advice and recommendations to clients relating to building surveys.
  • Prepare designs and specifications – Carry out the preparation of the design and specification of building projects from outline proposals to completion of the design and specification process.
  • Administer contracts – Implement administrative procedures for the running of a construction project. Issue instructions, deal with payment provisions, manage variation procedures and deal with completion and possession issues and the issuing of certificates.
  • Valuation and appraisal - Prepare capital and rental valuations of land and property for a range of formal and appraisal purposes and prepare client reports.
  • Land, property and planning law - Negotiate solutions to issues affecting both owners and occupiers of land and property including at least two of management, sales, lettings, purchase and/or planning.
  • Inspection and measurement – Undertake inspections of land and property and prepare related reports and advice. Use appropriate instrumentation to take measurements of land and property. Apply the appropriate guidance and use the appropriate basis to undertake measurements. Prepare and present measurements in an appropriate manner.
  • Tendering and procurement - Provide advice and recommendations as to appropriate procurement routes and manage the tendering processes relevant to them.
  • Costing and cost planning of construction works - Undertake the detailed quantification, costing and cost planning of complex construction works.
  • Manage efficiencies of construction contracts – Manage the construction phase of a construction project. Carry out life cycle costing and apply value engineering processes. Prepare data, reports and forecasts.

  • Level 6 Charter Surveyor Apprenticeship Standard, including;
    • BSc Commerical Management. 
  • Chartership for Royal Institute Commerical Surveyor - MRICS.
  • Day Release at Birmingham City University.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

A Level or equivalent in:

  • Maths (grade 5 or above)

BTEC or equivalent in:

  • BTEC Extended Diploma (grade DMM to DDM)

Other in:

  • A Levels (104 to 120 UCAS) (grade BCC to BBB)
