This role is a vital part of the business and presents a unique opportunity to build a career in manufacturing engineering. The successful candidate will work within the research and development department, gaining hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art facility equipped with five-axis machining centres, advanced 3D printers for engineering applications, CNC lathes (including sliding head systems), metrology equipment and digital CAD/CAM tools.

During the program, you will receive comprehensive training, including safe operation and programming of our CNC machines, as well as instruction on traditional machine tools, metrology, additive manufacturing, and digital CAD/CAM tools.
What will you be doing?
Attention to detail is paramount, with each product carefully assembled, inspected, and packed by skilled professionals. All these processes are carried out at our Birmingham factory, ensuring complete control over manufacturing, quality, and environmental responsibility.
Toolmaking is a vital part of the company, supporting key areas by designing, manufacturing, developing and maintaining bespoke tooling for prototyping and production. This role also involves producing small batches of components. Toolmakers collaborate closely with both the design and production teams to ensure the efficient and high-standard turnaround of tooling, supporting new product introductions as well as existing products.
This is workshop-based role. Job duties include but not confined to:
- Design, manufacture and development of a range of tooling such as: press tools, stamping dies, soft jaws, jigging and fixturing, and special purpose machinery.
- Maintenance and improvement of existing tooling.
- Setting and programming of CNC machinery for small batch and development purposes
- Using conventional toolroom and CNC machining techniques to manufacture components
- Production of one-off specials to a high standard
- Design for additive manufacturing and operation of various 3D printers
- Involvement in Continuous Improvement and Lean Manufacturing initiatives
- Any other duties that may from time to time be reasonably expected

Together with invaluable commercial and practical experience, you’ll gain several academic and vocational qualifications throughout your time with us, which are fully paid for, including:
- Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) – in year 1, in 6 week blocks to include 4 weeks at Make UK and 2 weeks in company
- Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence)
- Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
- In house training in line with your requirements.

As part of the Apprenticeship program, Samuel Heath will provide training in the following areas:
- CAD training: 3D modelling, creating sketches, assemblies and drawings
- CAM training: turning, 2D milling, 3D milling and multi-axis milling.
- Machine operation and programming: 5-axis machining centre and twin-spindle CNC lathe.
- Safety training on abrasive wheels and use of surface and bench grinders.
- Use of traditional machine tools: lathes, pedestal drills, milling machines, bandsaw.
- Fundamentals of machining: Process mechanics, selection of cutting tools, fixtures, tools holders, cutting parameters and toolpath strategies.
- Design for manufacturing principles.
- Design, manufacture and development of tooling: press tools, stamping dies, soft jaws.
- Fundamentals of additive manufacturing and operation of various 3D printers.
- Use of metrology equipment: micrometres, shadowgraphs, vernier calipers, gauges, CMM, impression compounds for dimensional control.
