Summary
We offer successful applicants a comprehensive and carefully tailored training programme to become a qualified engineer. Throughout your four year apprenticeship you will follow a highly practical training programme leading to a national recognised qualification.

Aged 18 and over will do 40 hours a week:
Monday - Thursday, 7.00am - 4.15pm and Friday, 7.00am - 12.00pm
Under 18’s will do a 37 hour week:
Monday - Thursday, 7.30am - 4.00pm and Friday, 7.00am- 12.00pm
No evening or weekend work is required during an apprenticeship

Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
For the majority of your apprenticeship, you will work alongside an experienced engineer in a small friendly team environment gaining work experience. You will attend our training provider to gain your nationally recognised qualifications on a day release basis. Salary is reviewed regularly throughout the apprenticeship to reflect progress against the objectives of each phase of training.
As part of your apprenticeship training you will work to become a fully skilled Mechanical Fitter.
You will work in the fitting shop and will learn how to assemble and test the parts to make our special purpose machinery.
Once fully skilled Mechanical Fitters:
- Assemble complete machines and sub-assemblies to customer specifications, and to test completed equipment.
- Assemble kit of parts using drawings and internal paperwork system
- Install pneumatic pipework
- Assist with testing of finished equipment and to complete test records
- Operate portable hand tools for drilling, grinding and sanding etc.
- Work within planned times for jobs, and to feedback deviations when necessary
- Supply feedback on machine and process improvements
- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, assisting other sections when required
- Support mechanical work within the maintenance team
- Work on customers’ sites as part of an installation & commissioning team
- Work on customers’ sites as part of the Customer Services team

Course contents
- Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
- Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
- Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
- Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
- Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
- Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
- Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
- Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
- Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
- Reporting work outcomes or issues.
- Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
- Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
- Operating within limits of responsibility.
- Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Your training plan
- College attendance will be 2 days a week at Peterborough College for the first year of the apprenticeship programme
- For the second and third year of the apprenticeship programme you will attend College 1 day a week
- For the fourth year you will not attend College as you will be fully work-based
