Summary

A Bookkeeping and Accounting Apprenticeship role is an excellent starting point for a career in accountancy. You will be supporting our clients Business Support department to deliver a range of services to our clients, including bookkeeping, VAT, management accounting and accounting software support.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

- You’ll start by learning the basics through an online bookkeeping course including the difference between debits and credits, sales and purchase, basic VAT rules and lots more.

- You will be assigned a Buddy who will be on hand to answer any questions and provide on-the job training to support your academic learning.

- You’ll have a personal development plan in place from Day One, providing step by step guidance on what’s needed to progress to the next level in your career journey.

- You’ll learn how to use a variety of different accounting software systems including Sage, QuickBooks and Xero.

- Provide accounting software support to their varied client base.

- Process a range of financial information for clients, from their bank statements, suppliers and customers invoices.

- Work closely with other departments within the Firm including tax, payroll and accounts.

- Build relationships with clients through communicating with them regularly by requesting information along with answering queries.

- You’ll learn how to prepare VAT returns ensuring they are filed accurately and on time.

- Learn how to draft a set of year-end accounts and have the opportunity to sit in client meetings so you can understand how your work is vital to their business.

- Have the opportunity to work off-site on clients’ premises, setting up their accounting systems including entering customers and suppliers’ details, opening balances (vital for the start of each year), year-end returns and VAT returns.

Course contents
  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 6/B or above)
  • Maths (grade 6/B or above)
