Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- Application Design & Development: Assist with the design and development of applications based on customer requirements
- Collaboration with Engineers: Collaborate with senior engineers to understand design specifications and project objectives
- Testing & Validation Support: Support testing and validation processes to ensure application performance and reliability
- Software Tool Utilisation: Learn to use software tools and technologies for design and simulation
- Documentation & Reporting: Contribute to documentation, reports, and presentations related to application design and development

Course contents
- How to comply with statutory requirements and stringent organisational safety requirements
- Producing components using hand fitting techniques
- Producing Electrical or Electronic Drawings using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) system
- Preparing and using lathes, milling and other general or specialist machines and High Tech equipment
- Wiring and testing electrical equipment, assembling and testing electronic circuits
- Using computer software packages to assist with engineering activities
- Producing engineering project plans
- Maintaining and improving electrical equipment and systems
- Project management in undertaking engineering activities
- Producing and working to engineering specifications and briefs, presenting and technical problem solving
- Scheduling and managing engineering activities
- Electrical and electronic product manufacturing and testing
- Demonstrating technical and commercial management in planning and managing tasks and resources
Your training plan
Electrical or electronic technical support engineer (degree) Apprenticeship Standard:
During your apprenticeship, you will receive two types of training.
On-the-job training will be delivered by Schneider Electric, your employer.
You’ll receive training and supervision to help you perform your role. This will include skills and knowledge that are outside of the apprenticeship but necessary for the job. In addition to ‘on-the-job’ training, they will support you in other ways to ensure your success.
Types of support will include:
- A comprehensive induction
- Mentoring or regular one-to-one guidance
- Social enrichment and networking opportunities
- Performance reviews
- Mental health and wellbeing support
- Feedback opportunities
Off-the-job training will be provided by a carefully selected training provider during your normal working hours.
You will spend at least 20% of your working hours (approximately 6 hours per week) completing ‘off-the-job’ training. This is protected time and a requirement for apprenticeship delivery.
This training will teach you the knowledge, skills, and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard, enabling you to achieve occupational competence.
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- 5 GCSEs including Maths, English, and STEM related (grade Grade 4/C or above)
A Level in:
- Mathematics and STEM (ideally Physics) (grade A Levels BBC / 112 UCAS Points)
