Hours

Your hours of work will be 37.5 per week, Monday to Friday inclusive. These are to be worked between 07.00 to 19:00 including 30 minutes for lunch, including washing time (unpaid) each day. Includes 1-day release to attend college for training.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

Working within our on-site delivery team, the electrical apprentice would typically be working across the many Playfords workstreams to see exposure to all types of electrical installation works. One day per week would require attendance at college throughout the first three years.

With close mentoring support, you will receive training and be required to:

Become an integral part of Playfords on-site engineering team
Develop your academic skills to understand electrical theory and practical installation methods via college training programmes
Develop your practical skills via on site experience and mentoring from our skilled engineers
Listen, learn and put into practice electrical installation methods working diligently alongside others within our team
Show good initiative towards learning both at college and on-site
Show a positive attitude towards working hard and to the best of your abilities at all times
Punctual at all times arriving at work ready to work
Ensure your commitment to the 4-year electrical apprenticeship is upheld throughout its duration

Course contents

Maintain the safety of self and others by applying statutory health and safety policies, procedures, and regulations when conducting electrical work.
Comply with all relevant legislation including environmental, regulations, codes of practice and other relevant information and guidance when planning and performing electrical work in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
Identify and use personal protective equipment (PPE) that should be used when undertaking electrical work in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
Carry out work in a tidy and safe manner, including restoration of the work area on completion of work.
Use verbal and written communication techniques suitable for the context, adapting style and use of terminology to suit the audience. Uses industry terminology.
Apply customer service principles and techniques to deliver customer or client service in industrial, commercial and communal residential environments.
Apply relevant legislation; Building Regulations; industry guidance notes; relevant codes of practice, the requirements of the current edition of the Wiring Regulations (BS7671) and other relevant standards while carrying out work.
Understand and apply the practices and procedures for planning and preparing to maintain electrotechnical systems and equipment.
Apply and use necessary mathematical and scientific techniques, formulae, and calculations that underpin an electrician’s work.
Use a range of tools, materials, equipment, and components, including prefabricated, relevant to performing electrical work in industrial, commercial and residential environments.
Design, plan, set up, and install electrical and related electronic systems including terminating and connecting cables in electrical wiring systems, installations, and equipment in commercial, industrial, and residential installations.
Inspect and test new and where applicable existing electrical Installations in industrial, commercial and residential environments using test equipment.
Apply diagnostic and problem-solving techniques to identify, assess and resolve electrical faults in industrial, commercial and residential environments.
Install electrical and electronic equipment and components, including traditional and novel technologies such as connections for EV charge points, battery storage, solar and thermal panels, heating and cooling systems.
Maintain electrical and electronic equipment and components, including traditional and novel technologies such as connections for EV charge points, battery storage, solar and thermal panels, heating and cooling systems.
Carry out and manage own work ensuring work is compliant to the standards required of an electrician working in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
Record work including the completion and maintenance of work documentation, recording of test results and preparation of appropriate certification.
Use relevant digital learning platforms and business communication and collaboration applications.

Your training plan

We will enter into a training agreement with you, and it is a condition of your employment that you honour this agreement and that you attend training in accordance with JIB Apprentice (stage 1) to achieve EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Building, Structure and the Environment), Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Electrical Installation and Achievement Measurement 2 (AM2S). You are expected to use the best of your ability in undertaking this qualification and dedicate sufficient time and effort to ensure that you complete the course as determined appropriate.

The electrical apprentice would be assigned an assessor through the College, who would typically come out to visit in the workplace to assess workplace Instillation & Maintenance Electrical skills competence.

The practical period is the time dedicated to the development of the knowledge, skills and behaviours for your apprenticeship which includes the following components.

Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification Technical and NVQ
On-programme assignments and practical assessments
English and maths at Level 2 must be achieved

The knowledge side would be provided via an online portal VLE (Virtual Learning Environment), and assignments/ evidence of work/ portfolio would be checked via an online Smart Assessor. If required, to upskill English & maths will be in additional commitment to this Apprenticeship.

Other requirements

Works will be carried out both indoors and outdoors. College attendance will be required one day per week for duration of the apprenticeship. Playfords are looking for individuals who are punctual, polite, driven, committed and willing to further their academic and practical skills whist undertaking the apprenticeship opportunity. A pro-active approach to learning new skills is essential.
