Summary

Working as part of our Research & Development team assisting with the designing of mechanical components for Search and Rescue equipment used in aircraft environments, as well as providing support for our production facilities.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

The role of apprentice mechanical engineering technician will involve:

  • Shadowing qualified staff to both assist them with the task at hand and also to gain knowledge
  • Using relevant design software (Solidworks)
  • Work with other departments to develop new products and improve existing
  • Assist with any manufacturing issues in production
  • Ensure work is well documented
  • Gain an understanding of electronics in relation to your work

  • Follow health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, segregation of resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Comply with engineering standards and regulations. For example, British Standards (BS), International Organisation for Standardisation standards (ISO). European Norm (EN).
  • Analyse engineering and manufacturing data and information to support technical outputs. For example, read and interpret text, data, engineering drawings, work instructions, method statements, operation manuals.
  • Apply scientific, technical or engineering principles.
  • Apply problem solving techniques to solutions for identified technical problems.
  • Organise, plan and prioritise workflow and scheduling of work with stakeholders.
  • Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
  • Produce job specific technical outputs. For example, engineering drawings, quality control management, computer control programming, business improvement, adverse incident reports, technical investigations, equipment appraisals and specifications.

Your training plan

Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

  • Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located in Hereford (HR4 9SX)

Level 3 comprises of:

  • Duration approximately 40 - 45 months
  • Years 1/2 is a combination of off the job training at HWGTA Training Centre as well as training on site with your employer
  • This includes 26-42 weeks within the training Centre plus 1 day per week in a classroom setting to cover practical and theory aspects and complete EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge
  • Years 3/4 based full time in company developing skills in preparation for the end point assessment to gain your level 3 qualification
  • You will receive monthly visits from your assigned Learning and Development Specialist, who will set you work, monitor your development and wellbeing, and discuss training sessions. They will also prepare you for your End Point Assessment
  • Additional training for functional skills in English and maths will be undertaken if needed
  • There is also a five-day teambuilding residential trip that is held in the spring of each year offered to all apprentices on programme

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English and Maths (grade 4 or C above)

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Design and Technology (grade 4 or C above)

BTEC in:

  • Engineering (grade Pass)
