This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Alpek Polyester UK Ltd. maintenance team at Wilton as an Instrumentation Maintenance Technician Apprentice. The role involves installing, maintaining, testing and repairing instrumentation equipment in a workshop, or on the chemical processing plant, working alongside skilled trades people.

Work

What you’ll do at work

Instrumentation Maintenance Technicians contribute to the fault-free and safe operation of the plants through the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of instrumentation equipment.

Job responsibilities

This is very much a ‘hands-on’ role and, under close supervision, your responsibilities will include:

  • Installing, maintaining, testing and repairing instrumentation equipment
  • Completing planned and unplanned instrument maintenance activities
  • Following maintenance standard operating procedures
  • Completing documentation accurately and on time
  • Trouble shooting problems in the event of failure of instrumentation equipment

You will be required to:

  • Work safely in a high-hazard environment, under highly regulated conditions, wearing safety equipment, as directed, and complying with all health, safety and environmental policies and procedures at all times
  • Work in varied conditions, inside and outside, on two process plants or in associated workshops, using engineering tools and specialist safety equipment
  • Safely use all necessary equipment and tools, and follow the appropriate engineering techniques, procedures and methods to complete maintenance tasks
  • Comply with required standards for documentation, good housekeeping, and time keeping

Science industry maintenance technician (level 3)

Course contents
  • Work safely in a science industry environment, understanding personal responsibility for Health, Safety, Environment and Security and principles of risk management.
  • Participate in continuous performance improvement.
  • Safely use all necessary equipment, following the appropriate engineering techniques, procedures and methods of relevance to complete the maintenance activity.
  • Prepare the work area for maintenance of plant, systems or components.
  • Carry out planned routine and non- routine maintenance activities, effectively, efficiently and safely.
  • Reinstate the work area after completing the maintenance of plant, systems and components.
  • Conduct safe and effective exchange of plant and equipment to others and accept and confirm responsibility for the plant and equipment within the work area.
  • Manufacture or assemble components within skill set.
  • Develop and apply theoretical knowledge of engineering and its application to the required sector & job ro This should be acquired through a qualification set at level 3 (or above) that is approved by a licensed professional engineering institution.

Your training plan

Block release and location: The first 12 months of the apprenticeship will be spent full time at Hartlepool College of Further Education (HCFE) to complete the foundation training and first year of the qualification, with a minimum 2 weeks of site placements. This will be followed by 24 months of hands-on, onsite training at Alpek Polyester, with regular support and guidance visits from your HCFE assessor, and end point assessment. The second year of the qualification will be delivered through day release.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • 5 GCSE's including Maths and English (grade 4/C or above)
