Wage

£15,000 a year

Compensation package will be reviewed annually. Shift pay to be paid monthly (in arrears) when a shift pattern has been rostered for more than 30% of the calendar month.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

As an Aircraft Maintenance Apprentice, you will embark on a structured program combining classroom learning and hands-on experience, designed to equip you with the expertise to become a certified Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic in just 36 months!

  • Engage in a comprehensive 36-month Apprentice program, including block-release classroom instruction at Farnborough College of Technology.
  • Under direct supervision, acquire practical aircraft maintenance experience (on-job-training) at United Airlines’ facilities at Heathrow Airport and, potentially, in the U.S.
  • Learn and apply maintenance skills across various areas, including Hydraulics/Pneumatics, Electrical Principles, Sheetmetal, Gas Turbine Engines, Structures, Aircraft Systems, Human Factors in Aircraft Engineering, and Aircraft Maintenance Practices.

Aircraft maintenance technician (level 3)

Course contents
  • Collect and interpret information or data to perform maintenance tasks.
  • Record or enter information: paper based or electronic. For example, job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers' documentation, asset management records, work sheets, checklists, waste environmental records and any reporting requirements.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations and procedures. Apply safe systems of work. For example, risk assessments, COSHH, tool control and use of equipment and tools.
  • Identify problems, collect evidence, analyse evidence, and determine the cause and maintenance activity required.
  • Plan, organise and use resources to complete tasks.
  • Follow instructions. For example, manufacturers and maintenance procedures.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Apply mathematical techniques and engineering principles to solve engineering problems.
  • Apply maintenance methods and practices. For example, remove, refit, replace, repair, systems or components.
  • Test and check aircraft equipment or aircraft systems. For example, built in test equipment, flight control systems, line replacement units or items.
  • Assess condition of aircraft components and aircraft equipment. Identify action required. For example, visual inspections.
  • Select, check, use, store and control tools and equipment. For example, ground support equipment or test equipment.
  • Apply good housekeeping, for example, prior to, during and after completion of the activity to the work area.
  • Use information technology. For example, for document creation, communication, and information management. Comply with GDPR and cyber security.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations and procedures. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Communicate in writing.
  • Consider the properties and characteristics of aircraft materials and the possibility of damage to aircraft whilst performing the activity. For example, barely visible impact damage.
  • Select aircraft consumables for carrying out maintenance activity.
  • Carry out pre-use checks of resources and ensure sufficient supplies of materials and consumables for maintenance activity.
  • Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.
  • Apply equity, diversity and inclusion policies and procedures.
  • Apply quality assurance procedures. For example, completion of aircraft servicing schedules or aircraft technical logs.
  • Apply team working principles.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

• Failure to provide qualification/exam results may result in your application being rejected. • Full, clean UK driving licence • Must be willing and able to travel internationally for training. • Must be flexible to work shifts, including evenings, early hours, weekends, and holidays. • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to thrive in a team-oriented learning environment. • Effective verbal and communication skills • Ability to demonstrate mechanical aptitude. • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English. • Willingness to undergo training for routine maintenance tasks. • Willingness to work in various conditions, both indoors and outdoors. • Must be legally authorised to work in the United Kingdom without sponsorship. • Must be able to obtain a permanent airside ID for LHR. • Reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the position. • Valid passport and ability to travel to the U.S. • Ability to travel independently to attend both the Farnborough College Campus and LHR airport.

Company benefits

As a full-time apprentice, you will be entitled to 150 hours of holiday per calendar year (1st Jan – 31st Dec) plus Bank Holidays.

After this apprenticeship

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you may be qualified to become an Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT). The expected progression at this stage is the attainment of your Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) licence, which United will support you through. This would be in readiness to hold your airworthiness release, whereby you can release aircraft, signing them off as airworthy.
