Summary

As Apprentice Paint Technician, you will gain professional training to gather the skills and knowledge to correctly prepare, prime and refinish(paint) repaired vehicles to manufactures specification. We have a whole host of experts here to guide you through your learning journey and help you to succeed in your apprenticeship.

Wage

£15,704 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

  • Following manufactures approved methods and techniques
  • Preparing paint work to new and repaired substrates
  • Applying foundation materials
  • Plastic repairs
  • Checking vehicle finishes for colour match
  • Formulating vehicle manufacturer colours
  • Application of vehicle colour base coats and clearcoats
  • Paint defect rectification
  • Completion of necessary repair documentation
  • Working closely with other members of the team to support and share knowledge

Your training course

Vehicle damage paint technician (level 3)

Equal to A level

Course contents
  • Ability to undertake appropriate job preparation prior to commencing repair e.g. substrate surface preparation, paint volume calculation etc
  • Ability to correctly identify the substrate materials to be refinished e.g. plastic, steel, aluminium etc
  • Ability to interpret relevant technical data and methods to create paint manufactures specified application
  • Ability to use refinishing materials following paint manufacturer specifications to reinstate vehicle finish back to high quality
  • Ability to identify and operate the correct repair tools, equipment and devices used in the process e.g mixing systems, paint booths, UV lamps and spray equipment

Your training plan

  • I.M.I (Institute of the Motor Industry) Level 3 Vehicle Paint Apprenticeship Standard qualification
  • Thatcham Academy will deliver the technical training requirements where this will take place with twelve one-week blocks during the apprenticeship
  • Additional practical training will take place at your place of work

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English Language (grade 4)
  • Mathematics (grade 4)
