Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

At The Black Horse Inn, we take great pride in offering the best possible experience for our guests. We’re a family-run pub serving high-quality, locally sourced produce, with every dish prepared from scratch.

You’ll receive full support and mentoring as you develop a broad range of skills in food and beverage service. Candidates aged 18 and over will also have the opportunity to learn bar skills, including how to care for ales and clean beer lines.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Serving food and beverages to a high standard, while maintaining professionalism.
  • Taking orders and providing attentive table service.
  • For those aged 18 and over, learning to work behind the bar.
  • Preparing for service, including setting up and refilling condiments.
  • Learning our menu, including daily specials.
  • Delivering exceptional customer service and promoting menu items to enhance the guest experience.
  • Communicating effectively with customers, adapting to their needs and ensuring excellent service.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene of work areas, utensils, and equipment.
  • Polishing cutlery and ensuring presentation standards are met.
  • Complying with food safety and allergen legislation during food and beverage preparation and service.
  • Handling customer payments securely and accurately.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a team, supporting colleagues and fostering a positive work environment.
  • Monitoring stock levels and assisting with restocking and stock rotation.
  • Addressing customer queries or concerns, escalating any issues when necessary.
  • Participating in training sessions to develop skills and broaden your knowledge of food and beverage service.
  • Contributing to team meetings by offering suggestions to improve service and efficiency.
  • Adhering to professional standards of behaviour, appearance, and punctuality.
  • Carrying out any other associated duties as required.

Your training plan

All training for this apprenticeship will take place in your workplace. A dedicated Vocational Trainer will visit approximately once every four weeks to create a personalised learning and development plan, setting out a schedule of training activities and objectives.

You will complete a combination of on-the-job and off-the-job training, including workshops, face-to-face sessions, and the development of a portfolio of practical evidence. You’ll receive ongoing support from your colleagues, along with continuous mentoring and training to help you develop a wide range of food and beverage service skills.

Your progress will be reviewed every 8 to 12 weeks with your Manager and Trainer.
