At Raven, we pay the national minimum or living wage rate applicable to your age for the first year of your apprenticeship and then the Real Living Wage once you have successfully completed the first year.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

  • Learn to carry out a range of carpentry works in occupied and empty properties to current legislative standards, to prevailing performance standards and in accordance with the Trust’s procedures
  • Learn to carry out inspections of occupied and empty properties to determine the extent of the repair, maintenance or installation required. Having identified the works required, carry out the most cost-effective and expedient works
  • Learn to carry out tasks such as but not restricted to, minor carpentry, tiling, and redecoration repairs linked to maintenance
  • Learn to carry out administrative work, using the handheld IT device to accurately record whilst on-site all processes from receiving jobs through to completion, using the appropriate schedule of rate code(s) and detailed records of materials used and work completed
  • Keep a log of all work carried out
  • To liaise via telephone calls/messages/e-mails on urgent works
  • Learn how to record materials used and maintain sufficient van stock to ensure that targets are met. Keep a record of van stock and purchase additional stock from approved wholesalers.
  • To attend college on a day release basis and complete all written college assignments and coursework required for the apprenticeship course to a high standard
  • Liaise and work constructively with all other trades, staff, contractors and customers
  • Drive and operate the works vehicle (if qualified) in a safe and efficient manner, ensuring the vehicle is in a safe and roadworthy condition at all times and that the correct fluid levels, tyre pressures are correctly maintained. Keep the vehicle clean and tidy. Maintain a record of fuel and mileage usage
  • To maintain in good working order and ensure the safe-keeping of the plant issued
  • To be able to work effectively and efficiently as an individual or as part of a team on all aspects of building maintenance work, from minor repairs to larger one-off projects

  • Site carpenter: Apply first fix techniques and practices for: 1. structural carcassing, 2. straight timber or metal partition walls, 3. floor joists 4. floor joist coverings and 5. straight flights of stairs.
  • Site carpenter: Install structural fixings.
  • Site carpenter: Size timber from sizing tables.
  • Site carpenter: Apply site second fix techniques and practices for:1. service encasement, 2. cladding 3. wall and floor units and fitments, 4. handrails and spindles to straight flights of stairs, 5. internal and external doors, 6. skirting boards and architrave, 7. window boards.
  • Site carpenter: Apply site carpenter techniques and practices to construction of rafter roofs, including trussed (prefabricated) and traditional (built on site) including the construction of verge, eaves and fitting loft access.
  • Site carpenter: Use and store laser levels for example cross line laser.
  • Site carpenter: Form connections, for example, using joints, nails, screws, bolts and adhesive.
  • Site carpenter: Apply measuring, marking out, cutting (square and angled), mitring, hinging and recessing techniques.
  • Site carpenter: Carrying out splicing and scribing techniques.
  • Architectural joiner: Produce setting out details, including setting rods, and mark out for timber products.
  • Architectural joiner: Produce basic woodworking joints including dovetail, bridal, mortise and tenon and halving.
  • Architectural joiner: Form connections using dowels, biscuit, staples and adhesives.
  • Architectural joiner: Apply techniques and practices to the manufacture and assembly of a timber window with casement including glazing rebates and associated ironmongery.
  • Architectural joiner: Apply manufacture and assembly techniques for first fix products: 1. straight staircases, 2. door frames and linings.
  • Architectural joiner: Apply manufacture and assembly techniques for second fix products: 1. timber doors, 2. wall and floor units, 3. timber mouldings, 4. staircase spindles and balustrades.
  • Architectural joiner: Fit ironmongery including door locks, door handles, door hinges, latches and draw runners.
  • Architectural joiner: Inspect, prepare and operate fixed machinery.
