Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

Inputting and updating Excel spreadsheets for client data consisting of:
Analysing invoices.
Analysing receipts.
Preparing client letters.
Scanning and photocopying documents for client electronic files.
Complete client VAT returns.
Complete sole trader accounts.
Complete personal tax returns.
Complete all tasks within the given time period.
To maintain effective working relationships and communicate clearly with other members of staff.

Course contents
  • Record transactional data.
  • Use the organisation’s standard tools and processes to examine data to identify transactional issues such as, reconciliations and inconsistencies between invoices.
  • Recognise and rectify routine errors, escalating as necessary.
  • Plan and review accounting and finance tasks.
  • Communicate with stakeholders to deliver accurate and timely results, avoiding jargon, using language tailored to the audience and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
  • Use finance and accounting software packages to accurately input and manage data to contribute to routine accounting tasks.
  • Handle data and digital technology in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.

Your training plan

You'll be working towards a Level 2 Accounts of finance assistant apprenticeship standard.

Foundation covers the basic principles of accountancy, and is your starting point if you’ve never studied accountancy before. You’ll learn the basic principles of accountancy, such as double-entry bookkeeping, costing and preparing financial statements, as well as how to use accountancy software. This level is ideal if you’re new to accountancy and finance, have previously worked in an accounts department, or are looking to change your career into Accountancy.

To pass this level, you'll be examined on five units. All assessments are computer-based exams (CBE). The area you will cover include: Bookkeeping transactions. Bookkeeping controls. Elements of costing. Using accounting software. Foundation Synoptic Assessment. Training will be provided either via classroom or remote sessions. An apprenticeship has to be relevant to the job you are undertaking and you must dedicate 20% of their time towards it.

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • Basic Maths (grade 9/A* - 5/B)
  • Standard English (grade 9/A* - 5/B)

Matthews Sutton & Co Ltd was established in 1984 by Peter Sutton, with the aim of providing professional accountancy services to sole traders, partnerships and companies across the region. We started out in a converted house on Penny Lane in Liverpool in 1984 and, whilst we have stayed true to our roots and not moved location in over 25 years, we have expanded.

After this apprenticeship

We are a training office for ACCA, so there is a chance of future progression to get fully qualified.
