Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

  • Assist with inspections, projects, investigations, meetings, and complaints
  • Handle evidence, records, and data with confidentiality and integrity
  • Conduct research and produce reports to aid investigations
  • Taking samples/test purchases of foods, consumer goods, such as toys, cosmetics, vapes, tobacco and electrical items, or jewellery and alcohol, to have them checked against legal standards
  • Working with partners to protect consumers and businesses from fraud and scams and interrupting doorstep rogue traders
  • Investigating rogue traders, preparing criminal cases, and giving evidence in court
  • Provide business support services and general administrative duties
  • Participate in meetings, training, and seminars to improve communication
  • An enhanced DBS check is required for council officers who visit residents’ homes or work regularly with children

  • Complete a Trading Standards Professional Level 6 apprenticeship fully funded by the Council. This will involve completing tasks and studies in the workplace, or as per course requirements
  • Join a personal and professional development programme that will involve a series of varied development activities and events throughout your time with the Council

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • Maths & English (grade 9-4 or A*-C)
