Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
- Review performance metrics and set goals
- Attend team meetings and inspect production lines
- Plan tasks and prioritise improvement initiatives
- Troubleshoot production issues and perform root cause analyses
- Implement process changes and update SOPs
- Collaborate with suppliers or vendors
- Analyse production data, track KPIs, and identify improvement areas
- Create reports and work on cost reduction strategies
- Collaborate with teams on projects and schedule preventive maintenance
- Train staff on new processes and troubleshoot mid-week issues
- Conduct inspections and review progress
- Prepare reports, adjust plans, and ensure compliance with standards
- Handle emergency breakdowns as needed
- Assist with large-scale projects like automation or new line setups
- Focus on continuous improvement using Lean or Six Sigma techniques

Course contents
- Foundation Stage: Complying with statutory regulations and stringent organisational safety requirements
- Foundation Stage: Producing components using hand fitting, fabrication and joining techniques
- Foundation Stage: Producing Computer Aided Design (CAD) models (drawings) using a CAD system
- Foundation Stage: Preparing and using lathes, milling and other general or specialist machines and high tech equipment
- Foundation Stage: Preparing and proving Computer Numeric Control programmes
- Foundation Stage: Using computer software packages to assist with and evaluate engineering activities
- Foundation Stage: Producing and managing engineering project plans
- Foundation Stage: Producing assemblies using a wide range of materials and techniques
- Development Team: Project management and scheduling engineering activities
- Development Team: Securing appropriate resources and managing budgets and resources
- Development Team: Implementing, monitoring and evaluating engineering processes
Your training plan
- Apprentices will undertake a Level 6 Manufacturing Engineer Degree Apprenticeship
- The training will be delivered by University of Staffordshire
- Teaching will be a mix of on the job and off the job training delivered face to face in university and online weekly sessions
- The programme is delivered using a blended learning model
- Apprentices will attend university for 1 week block of study per semester each academic year
- All face-to-face teaching is delivered at our Stoke on Trent campus
- Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, apprentices will achieve their BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade Grade A*-C/4-9 or equivalent)
- Maths (grade Grade A*-C/4-9 or equivalent)
Other in:
- Maths, Engineering, Science or equivalent (grade Minimum 104 UCAS Points)

Other requirements
Public transport to/from Hixon is limited. Own or self-organised transport is advised. This role is on-site only and apprentices must be willing to work on site for full duration of the apprenticeship

After this apprenticeship
- After the apprenticeship degree, there will be a permanent position available to the successful person
- You will qualify from an apprentice to a junior/assistant production engineer
- As you gain skills and experience there will be an opportunity to progress to a fully-fledged Production/Manufacturing Engineer
- Then onwards again to a Senior Production Engineer or Team Leader
