Summary

Engineering Fitters often produce, refurbish, modify or redesign high value, low volume components. At Treves UK this would involve the repair, maintenance and modification of bespoke tooling and equipment used to create automotive components for customers such as BMW, Nissan, Toyota & Jaguar Land Rover.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work

With over 325 individual tools on site right now, and new tooling arriving through 2025 this opportunity would allow the successful candidate to progress into a career at Treves UK after developing their skills both at College, and on site working with our experienced Tooling Engineer.

As part of the Maintenance Team, assistance is also provided when required to the Shift Engineers, and you will become familiar with the wide range of equipment we have on site, and how to use the workshop equipment to manufacture parts.

General Activities:

  • Comply with all relevant Health, Safety & Environmental Rules & Legislation
  • Assist the Tooling Engineer with his daily tasks
  • Complete required servicing of Tooling on site with the Tooling Engineer

College Activities:

  • Attend College two days per week as required
  • Complete Assignments as required
  • Ensure all relevant Job Write Ups are completed and documented

Specific Activities:

  • Learn how to use the Workshop Equipment (Pillar Drill, Lathe, Milling Machine, Bearing Press, Grinders) to repair / manufacture parts and Tooling
  • Learn how to use the (SAP) computer system to print, sign off and complete all servicing of Tooling on site
  • Learn how to take apart and rebuild Mechanical, Pneumatic & Hydraulic components including repairing damaged / worn parts with refurbishment kits
  • Work with the Stores Coordinator to ensure that the required amount of spare parts are in stock at all times, and plan for upcoming servicing appropriately

  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.

  • You will attend York College on day release, 2 days per week during term time

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • 2 other subjects (grade 4)
  • English (grade 4)
  • maths (grade 5 (on the higher paper))
  • science or technical subject (grade 4)

Other requirements

Your own transport would be an advantage as the Site is located 1.8 miles from the centre of Knaresborough. There are no public transport links to the Site. The automotive industry historically has a 1 or 2 week shutdown period during Summer - this is usually an extremely busy time for the Maintenance Team and we do request holidays not be taken during these times where possible. Over the past few years not all customers have closed at the same time so we have been able to accommodate requests. Initially you will be contacted by York College to confirm your commitment and suitability for the role.
