Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
We are looking for an Accounts Assistant with a background in bookkeeping and month-end procedures. This person should be AAT Level 3 qualified (or equivalent) and will help manage day-to-day accounts, including handling payments, bank reconciliations, invoices, and financial reports.
Responsibilities include the following:
- Accounts Payable & Receivable: Process invoices, payments, and ensure everything is up to date
- General Ledger & Journal Entries: Help keep accurate financial records by entering data and making journal entries
- Month-End Procedures & Reconciliations: Assist with tasks at the end of the month, including checking financial records and preparing reports
- VAT Returns & MTD Compliance: Prepare and submit VAT returns in line with Making Tax Digital (MTD) rules
- Financial Reporting: Help prepare financial reports like Profit and Loss (P&L) statements and balance sheets
- Bank & Credit Card Reconciliations: Ensure all bank and credit card transactions match the records
- Invoice Management: Track and manage invoices from suppliers and clients to make sure everything is paid correctly and on time

- Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
- Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
- Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
- Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
- Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
- Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
- Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
- Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
- Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
- Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

Your training plan
Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship Level 3 - AAT
This Level 3 programme builds on the foundations for entry-level talent to support growth within an Accountancy and Finance function.
Employees on this apprenticeship will ensure Accountancy and Finance practice performs in the most effective way. It includes the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting and provides the opportunity for them to support the business with essential skills and behaviors to drive results.
You will learn how to prepare financial statements for Sole Traders and Partnerships, the importance of management accounting information, and how to prepare VAT returns. You’ll develop the technical skills to start, or progress, your career in accountancy and this will allow you to continue with your studies to Level 4.
To pass this level you will need to study the following four units:
- Financial Accounting; Preparing Financial Statements (FAPS)
- Management Accounting Techniques (MATS)
- Tax Processes for Business (TPFB)
- Business Awareness (BUAW)
You will also be required to complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which will include a synoptic assessment and discussion with supporting portfolio.
Training will be provided by attending either face-to-face classroom-based lessons or Live Online. An apprenticeship has to be relevant to the job you are undertaking, and you must dedicate time to off-the-job training, as well as completing knowledge, skills and behaviors associated with your apprenticeship.

Essential qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:
- Maths (grade 9/A* - 4/C)
- English (grade 9/A* - 4/C)
Other in:
- AAT (grade 2)

Other requirements
Annual leave entitlement 25 days and pension. No parking, but close to tube stations. Please note this salary is £20,000 to £24,000 dependant on experience. This role is hybrid with one day at home (usually fridays)
