Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
- A great opportunity to join a leading Security Systems Integrator, designing, installing, and supporting hi-tech CCTV, access control and security solutions across a wide field of sectors: including industrial; leisure and hotels; town centres; schools and the domestic scene.
- The chosen candidate will play a key role within the company offering great workmanship and service to customers.
- Furthermore you will be expected to attend various training courses on the different products and services that the company utilises to ensure you are a capable and trained individual within this exciting field.

Course contents
- Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and apply control measures.
- Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
- Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
- Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
- Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
- Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
- Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
- Carries out risk assessments.
- Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.
- Plan and install systems cabling.
- Carry out maintenance activities on fire detection and alarm systems and their components.
- Carry out maintenance activities on intrusion alarm, access control, video surveillance (CCTV) and their components.

Your training plan
- Smart Integrated Solutions will provide all Health & Safety training together with a wide variety of applications of job experiences.
- Training will be at the Stroud College and will consist of classroom on-site learning in accordance with the disiplines required to carry-out the Security Engineers' role.
- Training will be in weekly 'blocks' consisting of seven in the first year. When not at college you will be working out on-site with other Systems Engineers.
- At the end of the three years you will gain the Level 3 (equivalent to an A level) Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Engineer (FESS).
Requirements
Essential qualifications
BTEC or equivalent in:
- Electrical or Engineering (grade Level 3)

Other requirements
Ideally the candidate should live in the local area (Calne, Wiltshire, SN11 9PP). The candidate should have a full driving license, (or working towards this). No criminal record (Security vetting to BS7858 will be undertaken on all employees once a conditional offer has been made). Candidates must have Normal Colour Vision.

After this apprenticeship
After the candidate has sucessfully completed the training then considerations for a full-time permanent role is available. This will be based on attainment and aptitude to the job. The plan is to become a skilled integration engineer within the security industry in either the installation, service, or design department.
